Are the Taliban and Iran teaming up to stop IS?

Author Arash Karami Posted June 6, 2016

An article on hard-line Iranian news website Jahan has confirmed for the first time that the recently killed Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour was in Iran before he was killed May 21. While Iranian media had previously confirmed meetings with Taliban officials, the article shows a deeper strategic shift in Iran toward a group it previously helped topple in order to counter the rising threat of the Islamic State (IS) on its eastern border.
An article on the Jahan news website reported that the former Taliban leader who was killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan had met with Iranian officials one week before he was killed.

According to the article, Mansour was in Iran one week before he was killed by a US drone strike in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province. Mansour had reportedly spent two months in Iran and conducted “various negotiations with different organizations and institutions.”
Jahan reported that one of the agreements between Iran and Mansour was “the prevention of Taliban bodies from joining [IS].” Iran and Mansour had also reportedly agreed to prevent the spread of IS influence in northern Afghanistan and on the Afghan-Tajikistan border. There had also been agreements to counter drug smuggling. A large percentage of Afghanistan’s opium production is either consumed in Iran or travels through Iran to its final destination in Europe.
The article reported that “there is no specific information” on how Mansour was targeted and denied reports that Iran was somehow involved. The article rather speculated that Mansour’s “semi-independence” from Pakistan could have displeased some members of its spy agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence, and they may have given Mansour’s location to the United States.
Jahan’s motivation for publishing the article and revealing previously unconfirmed information cannot be known. Political motivations or even disinformation should not be ruled out. However, it is a startling admission given the history between Iran and the Taliban.
Iran has historically been the main sponsor of the Taliban’s previous domestic rival, the Northern Alliance. In 1998, Iran nearly went to war against the Taliban government after their diplomats were killed in Mazar-i Sharif, Afghanistan. Iran had even offered assistance in the overthrow of the Taliban during the 2001 US invasion. Iran also has a positive relationship with Afghanistan’s central government, recently inking a trilateral transit route with the country.
But the rise of IS on both sides of Iran’s borders has turned a strategic rival into a tactical ally. A former official in the Barack Obama administration told Al-Monitor correspondent Barbara Slavin that Iran’s “estimate of the threat of [IS] in Afghanistan is higher than that of the United States.”
This tactical relationship is still far from being open or confirmed by Iranian officials. After Mansour was killed, anonymous US and European officials told the Western press that Mansour was in Iran possibly for medical reasons, to visit his family or to meet with Iranian officials. At that time, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hossein Jaberi Ansari said, “The officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran deny that such a person on such a date entered Pakistan from Iran’s borders.” Either Ansari was not in the know or he was intentionally deceptive over the fact that Mansour was traveling under a forged Pakistani passport under the name of Mohammad Wali.
Iranian media had previously reported on meetings with Taliban officials, though revealed less information on the content of the meetings. In May 2015, it was reported that a Taliban delegation from the group’s political office in Qatar had traveled to Tehran. Tayyeb Agha, who was the head of the Taliban’s political wing in Qatar when the visit took place, reportedly led the delegation’s meeting with Iranian security officials. Tasnim News Agency, which broke that story, wrote that Taliban officials had previously visited Iran on two occasions to meet with security officials and for an Islamic conference in Tehran.

US does not have Iranian permission to operate drones over the Iran-Afghanistan border as they are permitted to do with Pakistan.

Why has the US and Ghani not criticized Iran for supporting and providing sanctuary to the Taliban insurgency?

There is no evidence off your claim only some speculations, Pakistan is trying hard to devert attention to India and Iran, like look at them, I am not the only bad guy in the region who helps terrorists, but its too late, everyone sees Pakistan as a terror sponcoring state and more political leaders are turning their back on them.

Nobody is buying your propaganda, Pakis. Even when you are speaking the truth International Community will take you for liars. You are out of credit. Pakistan is a terrorist pariah state. Nobody likes you. Both Iran and India will use their strong lobbies and growing economies in order to isolate more and more Pakistan. The day you sold Gwadar to China USA became your enemy as well. All these countries are our allies. Your days are numbered alhamdulillah.

The article is not written by me LOL

Did you read the article from Arash Karami?

It is a fact that Iran does not allow US drones to operate over Iranian airspace near the Afghan border.

It is a fact that Pakistan gives US permission to carry out drone strikes in Pakistan like Pakistan gives NATO supply lines.

Relax, I had nothing to do with the writing of this article, or the JahanNews.

Arash Karami, a Pro-Iranian writer for Al-Monitor, is citing JahanNews, an Iranian media outlet affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards. This JahanNews report confirms Mansours presence and dealings with Iranian officials.

Maybe you should write JahanNews in Iran, and ask them why they have published this article which you find so offensive?

Here is the article in JahanNews. You should be able to find their contact info so you can write in your complaint. Please update us when they reply.

Iranian goverment seeking contact is a diffrent thing from harbouring and protecting taliban and other terrorists what Pakistan is doing. You should know the diffrence.

Thats because Pakistan is like a prostitute: you are ready to allow other nations to rape you in return of money.

Never denied Iranian contacts with Taliban. I told you, my illiterate friend, that Iran needs them in order to keep at bay IS. And also for other issues such as Salma Dam in Herat which is going to harm badly Khroasan Province. But that doe snot mean they support a Taliban take over.

Whether you like it or not, Pakistan is a terrorist state. Nobody likes you. You are surrounded by three hostile countries. Just wonder why.

The Afghan government should help Taliban to increase their ties with Iran. This will cause Pakistan to be suspicious of the Taliban and withdraw their support and only support those Taliban who are willing to work under Pakistani orders. This will split the Taliban in two and hopefully they will finish other off. Win Win solution for all.

Afghanistan is already agreeing on that, buddy. Our government did not say a single word against Iran when its pretty obvious Mansoor had links with them. Our government is also supporting some elements among the Taliban such as Mullah Rasool, that would eventually lead to the split of Taliban.

I have said several times that Taliban´s days are numbered. Many of them will join peace process. Those who are the most hardcore among them will join IS. This group will be split into three or four parties just like TTP in Pakistan. This will also put a lot of pressure on Pakistan: the international community is angry at them and they demand them to take measures against Taliban. Peace negotiations is the only way for Pakistan to save face. If negotiations fail, they will be forced to take action. Do you know what will happen then, guys? That Afghanistan and India will start supporting Afghan Taliban against Pakistan. They will take the war to Pakistan.

Dark days ahead for North Kore 2.0 AKA Pakistan.

Brother, I encourage you to visit Afghanistan and stop talking from your safe hole in UK USA or wherever you live in. In Herat most of the girls are going to school. Even in rural areas. Basically the average Herati loves culture and we have always encouraged and praised education. Herat is considered among Afghans as a city of culture. Unfortunately we have some Pashtun nationalists AKA Talibans trying to screw everything up.

Afghanistan: 3 schoolgirls hit by suspected Taliban poison gas attacks in Herat

You see? These are your contributions to your own country! Instead ganging up on me you rather should fight extremism among your own people. We are working hard to leave behind our feudal society and have done a huge progress in the past 15 years. Thats every Persianspeaker province is five decades ahead of you. The same thing can not be said about Pashtuns and their tribal culture.

You see? Badghis is a mainly Tajik province. Its pretty safe and stable. Except two districts: Murghab and Ghormach. Do you know why? Because they are mainly inhabited by Pashtuns! Think about it.
