Pakistan also provided intel to locate Mullah Mansour: NYT report

A recently published report in The New York Times claims that Pakistan also provided intelligence reports which helped in tracking Mullah Akhtar Mansour’s whereabouts. According to the report, the United States picked up a mix of phone intercepts and tips from sources in addition to the intelligence reports from Pakistan to locate Mansour.

The report also claims that US President Barack Obama gave the go-ahead weeks ago to target and kill Mullah Mansour. The order was given to US Military’s Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) to attack Mansour through a drone strike.
An unnamed source also told reporters that the government of Pakistan had been informed several weeks ago, that Mullah Mansour was a target. However, it was never shared that he would be targeted on Pakistani soil.
According to the same report, Mansour had gone to Iran for undisclosed medical treatment and he was targeted and killed when he was coming back to Pakistan from Iran in a rented vehicle in a remote area of Balochistan.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif and the Army Chief, General Raheel Sharif were informed of the attack after it had taken place. The Premier strongly condemned this and called the move an attack on Pakistan’s sovereignty.
The attack on Mullah Mansour is the most high-profile US incursion into Pakistan since the 2011 attack on Osama bin Laden’s compound in the city of Abbottabad.

Yes, it claims the US intelligence tracked him using his SIM card while he was in Iran. WSJ and NYT claims that Mansour was in Iran to meet his family and receive medical treatment. This perspective (given to them by WH and Pentagon officials) is purposefully oblivious to the fact that Taliban insurgency are supported by Iran (IRGC) and have training camps in Iran. In my opinion, the reason for this spin is out of consideration for the White House's policy of preventing non-nuclear sanctions on Iran which would give Iran a reason to walk away from the nuclear deal. In that scenario, no nation would likely be interested in abiding by US sanctions. Iran would lose nothing by walking away.

I believe another purpose of this spin is to provide a cover for Pakistani military who permitted the US drone strike in Balochistan. Fact remains that Pakistani military has to clear it's airspace for those drone strikes. There is no chance Pakistan would permit an Indian drone to operate over Kashmir. Pakistan Gen Raheel Sharif did not comment on the drone strike for 4 days, and when he did it was only after he met with the US envoy.

The Pakistani military had many reasons for wanting Mansour dead, one of them being the fact that under Mansour (been head of Taliban insurgency for 3 years) Taliban's relationship with Iran has grown significantly. Russia has also reached out to the Taliban, and this was under Mansour.

The fact that Mansour's family lives in Iran suggests that Mansour no longer trusted Pakistan. Pakistan uses threats on family of Taliban officials in order to keep them under their influence.

You should read about Deputy Secretary Ben Rhodes "Echo Chamber" specifically in regards to influencing media coverage on Iran (in order to secure public support for the Iran deal). It is relevant because Iran now feels it can do as it wants to the US, and US will just be passive (Iran arrested and filmed US troops, US had no response but to kindly ask for them to be released).
