Afghanistan is an agricultural country with a range of climate suitable for cultivation of different crops and fruits. Agriculture sector has been the backbone of the Afghan economy for decades, but unfortunately, civil war and the Taliban regime uprooted the infrastructure.
Since the fall of the Taliban, Afghanistan’s agriculture sector has vastly improved. United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the United Nations (UN) and some non-governmental organizations (NGO) have worked diligently to improve the irrigation system, distribution of seeds, fertilizer, tools and technology to hundreds of thousands of Afghan farmers to start productions. Export accounts for 20 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) in Afghanistan.Exports in Afghanistan increased from $ 69.10 million in 2002 to $ 514.97 million in 2014. Afghanistan’s main exports are carpets and rugs, dried fruits and medicinal plants.
