Bengali activist living in London posted this on Facebook:
Bangladesh sees executions by hanging of two more opposition leaders!
Only a short while ago the Bangladeshi autocratic government has yet again hanged two alleged war criminals using its kangaroo courts and politically biased judiciary. The main reason for changing Ali Ahsan Mujahid of Jamati Islami and Salahuddin Qader Chowdhury of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, both from the opposition parties, is political revenge and retribution. May God have mercy on their souls! She uses the 1971’s independence struggle as a mantra to blackmail the Bangladeshi nation to submit to her irrationality, barbarity and authoritarianism.
Awami League, the governing party in Bangladesh is totally a fascist party with a delusional, self-obsessed and narcissistic leader called Hasina, who lives off her equally narcissistic cronies’ continuous flattery. Her only claim to power has been her father's role as the founding president of the country. Her role as the supreme leader of her party was axiomatically betrothed to her, similar to the current supreme leader of North Korea. This has opened up a floodgate to crooks and criminal to high positions in the government offices so that she is never challenged.
Her student party is amassed with criminal thugs, dacoits and day light robbers. They terrorise the local towns and villages with guns and knives in broad daylight. They take people hostage, disappear people and threaten to rape the wives and daughters of people who raise their opposition to their thuggishness. They even pillage peoples’ wealth and forcibly grab land from people randomly. They provide a constant supply of henchmen for her party’s dirty work. Under her direct order the countries democratic journey has been constricted, judiciary and security services politicized, opposition leadership killed, political activists incarcerated and tortured, innocent people brutalized and the country deeply polarized.
The reign of terror under Hasina is unlikely to dissipate since there is no credible opposition left to mount a challenge, take the mantle of providing an alternative vision and no real prospect of a populist movement arising and leading a revolution to free the country from her tyranny. She has extremely cleverly captured every institution of the country for her party to forever remain in power. She has appointed party loyalists to every section of the civil service, security apparatus, judiciary and government owned national assets. She has given huge contracts to energy, banking and telecommunications sectors to her most trusted friends who pay huge bribes, continuous financial support to Hasina’s whimsical and evil adventures and promise to remain politically silent are the only conditions these money makers have to observe to earn mega dividends.
The media licenses has been almost solely awarded to Awami League cronies with it’s MP’s and senior ministers holding substantial stake in those companies. These media outlets constantly broadcast government scripted lies and create false consensus amongst the masses by whipping up nationalistic fervor. They keep on regurgitating the same old exaggerated stories from 1971’s independence war and they help sustain this festering wound, never objectively investigating the truth. These media organisations are culpable to the instability in the country and the one-party state that has emerged fulfilling Hasina’s lifelong ambition.
Hasina may hang many opposition leaders. She may bar many opposition activists and human rights champions from her country. She may get away with her crimes now, but there is a day when Hasina and her cronies would be held accountable for their crimes. Her days of reckoning is nigh and certain, as certain as day and night. I look forward to that day and pray for its arrival soon. The country is facing a terrible future and its 180 million people have no prospect of a real change. International voices of concern, condemnation and political isolation could yield some fruit. She needs to be stopped in her evil stride and Bangladeshis need to be freed from Awami League’s tyranny urgently.
