Islamabad, Nov 9 (Prensa Latina) China''s special envoy for Afghanistan, Deng Xijun, today reiterated his countrys support for the negotiations between the Kabul government and the Taliban.
We offer to host a meeting between the two sides, the diplomat said in an interview with the Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune.
We have already facilitated the peace process and we are ready to back it up again if the two sides in the conflict so desire, but we will not mediate, he said.
Following his recent appointment, Deng visited Islamabad on Friday and Saturday for talks with officials of the Ministry of External Affairs of Pakistan to address the issue.
"A sustainable solution can only be achieved through political means. We hope that with joint efforts China, Afghanistan and Pakistan can achieve this target", he said.
The Chinese official demanded "respect for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan," as he called to contribute to the peaceful reconstruction of that nation and regional security and stability.
Earlier this year the Chinese government hosted a meeting between representatives of Kabul and the insurgent group in Urumqi city.
In July, the dialogue was resumed in Murree resort, about 60 kilometers from the capital, but days later it was postponed at the request of the Taliban after the announcement of their spiritual leaders death, Mullah Mohammad Omar.
Since then, the new leader of the movement, Mullah Akhtar Mansoor, is silent on the issue, amid disagreements within the armed formation on his appointment.
