Polio virus strain in Syria confirmed as being from Pakistan - WHO

Polio that has crippled at least 13 children in Syria has been confirmed as being caused by a strain of the virus that originated in Pakistan and is spreading across the Middle East, the World Health Organization said.

Genetic sequencing shows the strain found in Syrian children in Deir al-Zor, where an outbreak was detected last month, is linked to the strain of Pakistani origin found in sewage in Egypt, Israel and Palestinian territories in the past year.

"Genetic sequencing indicates that the isolated viruses are most closely linked to virus detected in environmental samples in Egypt in December 2012 (which in turn had been linked to wild poliovirus circulating in Pakistan)," the United Nations agency said in a statement on Monday.

Closely-related strains of the wild poliovirus of Pakistani origin have also been detected in sewage samples in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza Strip since February 2013, it said.

Polio virus has been confirmed in 13 of 22 children who became paralyzed in the northern Syrian province of Deir al-Zor. Investigations continue into the other 9 cases. It is Syria's first polio outbreak since 1999.

No children in Egypt, Israel or the Palestinian territories have been hit by polio thanks to high immunization rates and a strong response to the alert, WHO spokeswoman Sona Bari said.

Polio virus is endemic in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria despite a 25-year-old campaign to eradicate the disease, which can paralyze a child in hours.

IMMUNISATION RATES

Islamist fighters from countries including Pakistan are among groups battling to oust President Bashar al-Assad, leading to speculation that they brought the virus into the country.

The WHO says it is unlikely that adults, who generally have higher immunity, carried the virus into Syria and that its mode of transmission will probably never be known.

Syria's immunization rates have plummeted from more than 90 percent before the conflict to around 68 percent. Polio mainly affects children under five and cannot be cured, only prevented.

"All the children (paralyzed) are under two years old, so they were all born after immunization services fell apart," Bari told Reuters. "No doubt the outbreak will be large."

Children living in unsanitary conditions are especially vulnerable to the virus, which spreads via faecal-oral transmission and contaminated food and water.

More than 20 million children, including 1.6 million in Syria, are to be vaccinated in Syria and neighboring countries over the next six months, U.N. agencies said last week.

If we compare Iran with Pakistan, Pakistan is a much better neighbor than Afghanistan. But that doesn't mean we should ignore all the injustices Pakistani government and army are committing against Afghan refugees and Afghanistan.

This is because Afghan refugees mostly live in Pakhtunkhwa and northern Balochistan, which is part of their extended homeland anyway. They are living among fellow Pashtuns. The situation for both Afghan refugees and Pashtun refugees from FATA in Karachi on the other hand is terrible and is comparable to the hostile environment Afghan refugees find in Iran.

The demographic of Afghan refugees to napakistan and to Iran are different.

In Iran, Afghan children aren't even allowed to go to school.

I remember one Panjsheri in UK. He use to live in Iran. He said, we often criticize Pakistanis, but I have yet to see a Pakistani serving his guests alcohol in front of his wife and children. A practice quite common among liberal Afghans. He also said in Pakistan, Afghans own businesses, houses and have Pakistani employees. In Iran, his own brother was jailed because his boss committed fraud and blamed his own employee in order to avoid getting caught.

Well,i have noticed one problem among the afghan refugees living in Pakistan.Poor or Rich,they don't send their children to school despite the fact that upto matric even books are provided for free.The Pakistani pashtuns give lot of important to education,many of the board toppers are female and from FATA.

I don't know the situation in Afghanistan but those living in Pakistan doesn't give much importance to education and i don't really know the reason.

I hope it will change.

The common people of Iran are extremely racist and intolerant. I have heard so from many Afghans who use to live there.

I do know a few decent Iranis here in Holland. But most of them are extremely intolerant and hateful. They are very racist towards black people, their women dye their hair blond and wear blue lenses and constantly talk trash about non White people.
