Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates alluded to a conspiracy against top military commanders by Vice President Joe Biden, among others, during an interview on Thursday.
In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier, Gates said that President Obama did not convey confidence to the troops he was sending to Afghanistan, which was ultimately detrimental to the mission:
“My view is that when a president sends troops in harm’s way, he has to convince them that he believes risking their lives is worthwhile. He has to be able to convince them that their cause is noble and just — and warrants their sacrifice. And even after he sent an additional 60,000 troops to Afghanistan, the President just didn’t do that.”
Gates insisted on further problems with the Obama administration’s handling of the war effort, such as interference with military matters by White House staffers. He said:
“It was the operational micromanagement that drove me nuts — of White House and [National Security Council] staffers calling senior commanders out in the field and asking them questions, of second-guessing commanders. That’s the kind of thing that made me crazy.
But Gates spoke of another problem with the White House’s methods when taking over the reigns in Afghanistan from the Bush administration, for which Gates also served as Defense Secretary. When posed with why he wrote that “President Obama was deeply suspicious of [the military’s] actions and their recommendations,” Gates told Baier:
“I think this was particularly true in Afghanistan. And I think there were people in the White House — and I don’t want to name any names — who were constantly goading him and saying ‘the military is trying to box you in’ and ‘the military is trying to trap you,’ ‘the military is trying to bully you.’ ‘The military is trying to make you do something you don’t wanna do.'”
Baier then pressed Gates on whether Vice President Biden was one of the voices expressing those theories, to which he responded, “I think so. And I was told so,” adding that Biden “was not alone.”Gates departed from the Defense Department in 2011 and has since taken the helm as President of the Boy Scouts of America.
