  • Pakistan's Role in War on Terror

    by A.H.Amin

Pakistans role the Afghan War being waged post 9/11 has been ambiguous all along.

While Pakistans military establishment which has controlled Pakistans Afghan and India foreign policy since 1977 saw Afghanistanas its backyard and a training ground for Pakistani non state proxies,Pakistans military junta was forced to be a US ally at gunpoint in the post 9/11 period.

It is funny hearing about claims of Pakistani state about war on terror and losses it has suffered ! A brief examination of claims :---

We supported the USA and lost as a result many billions

Pakistan agreed to support USA when forced with an ultimatum . From 2001 to 2008 Pakistani economoy witnessed record growth and no losses as claimed. The losses that Pakistani economy suffered came after 2008 as a result of internal failures like failure to have a workable energy policy dating from 1970s , political infighting etc.

Pakistan gained a major economic advantage out of it and the post 9/11 Pakistan saw a major economic growth all along thans to US aid and Afghan war from November 2001 till as late as early 2008.

An article by Pakistans leading economist Dr Ashfaque thus stated “Pakistan positioned itself as one of the four fastest growing economies in the Asian region during 2000-07 with its growth averaging 7.0 per cent per year for most of this period. As a result of strong economic growth, Pakistan succeeded in reducing poverty by one-half, creating almost 13 million jobs, halving the country's debt burden, raising foreign exchange reserves to a comfortable position and propping the country's exchange rate, restoring investors' confidence and most importantly, taking Pakistan out of the IMF Program.”

Note that before becoming an ambiguous US ally in post 9/11 , Pakistan was under sanctions before 9/11 and its economy was near collapse.

Real reason why Pakistani economy is bankrupt

    1. Tax evasion by rich . Tax as part of GDP has declined in last 20 years from 18 %to 9 % of GDP.
    2. Massive exploitation and monopolies where 2 % own 80 % of wealth and pay nominal taxes while the 98 % population with 20 % wealth is taxed by taxes on fuel electric and utilities to raise 91 % of GDP.
    3. Massive corruption by government officials who as per admission of ex Finance Minister Tareen are involved in corruption of 50 Billion Rs per year.

Why should we (Pakistani Establishment) be supporting Taliban against whom our troops have suffered 5000 casualties and our civilians more than 10,000 ?

This is because Taliban groups attacking Pakistan Army are attacking Pakistani military and civilians as revenge against their non combatants and combatants killed by Pakistani military in 2003-9 and these Taliban groups have little or nominal connection with vast bulk of Taliban grouos fighting US/NATO in Afghanistan.

We deployed 80,000 Troops to support USA in war on terror ?

The Pakistani troop deployment in FATA was done after General Musharraf became angry with an assassination attempt which was linked to FATA militants. From 2001 till 2010 no regular Pakistani troops were deployed on some 1500 Km border with Afghanistan where some 80 % of Afghan Taliban were opposing US/NATO and some 70 % of US forces were deployed.

Pakistan contrary to common held beliefs did not deploy any of its regular forces against Taliban fighting against US forces in Afghanistan. All along the 1500 Km border opposite Kandahar,Paktika , Helmand and Nimroz !

Contrary to prevalent myths Pakistan did not send its forces into FATA and Waziristan to aid US forces in Afghanistan but out of retaliation against the 2003-4 assasination attempt on Musharraf linked to FATA militants.

The militant backlash against Pakistani military had little link with US military actions in Afghanistan but a major link with excessive use of force by Pakistani military in FATA resulting inmajor collateraldamage.

The Swat Rebellion of 2008-9 also did not have any major link with US operations in Afghanistan but was a result of excessiveuse of military force in Lal Masjid in Islamabad which was avoidable and unnecessary.

Similarly the Balochistan war also had little connection with US presence in Afghanistan or Indian conspiracies but the major reason was excessive use of force by the usurper Musharraf against the Baloch and an attempt to change the demography of Balochistan by projects of ulterior motivation like Gwadar Port,Greater Kachi Canal and Mirani Dam.

The major crisis of Pakistan is internal while the Pakistani establishment seeks to externalise it .

The major reason of growth of religious militancy in Pakistan is misuse of religion by Pakistani establishment and conveniently abandoning it when it suits them.

The major reason of Pakistans economic problems post 2008 was the fallout of excessive use of military force by Musharraf and the resultant political instability.

Pakistans civilians have failed but they failed because of the mess that they inherited from a usurper military regime.

But the important fact is that Pakistans civilians do not control Pakistans Afghan or India policy , so failure if any will be squarely the failure of Pakistans security establishment in the final summing up.

It is time that the Pakistani establishment does some inner thinking and the Pakistani media stop blaming Blackwater,USA,Israel and India for sabotage carried out by Pakistans vested interests to achieve their narrow class agendas

To those Pakistanis who say Afghans and Indians are being biased about Pakistan exporting terrorism, what do you have to say about David Cameron?

David Cameron made that speech in India, they were trying to appease the Indians because they know of India emerging as a country full of opportunities for them.

That is not to say Pakistan plays a double game, but obviously Pakistan wants to gain its own interests. Just like England and USA want to gain its own interests in Afghanistan. So its quite ironic that these people are blaming eachother, when they are worse than eachother. Indians slaughter kashmiris and nobody talks about that kind of terrorism. Its all a joke

Indians would have stayed loyal to UK even if he hadn't made such a comment, so I don't accept this kind of excuse. All that matters is that now it should be clear to Pakistanis that Afghans and Indians by far ain't only one blaming Pakistan for terrorism.

That's because whatever India is doing is an 'inside-war', they are not exporting terrorism to any other country are they? India is minding their business while even though Pakistan has enough problems of it's own, yet it's not done interfering with Afghanistan and Indian part of Kashmir. Also don't forget that it weren't Indians who blew up trains and buses in London.

It was BRITISH who blew up trains and buses in London...BRITISH BORN!! They spent all their lives in UK.

You are in denial Shayesta, Cameron purposely chose INDIA a place to make that 'statement' that Pakistan is such and such. I dont think that was a coincidence. Have you heard Cameron statement in Turkey about Israel? Its all politics...

India is not doing an inside war, they interferred in Afghanistan in the past supporting the northern alliance. So stop trying to defend India they are in no way angels.

^ If those Pakistanis blowing up trains and buses in UK were Britons because they were born there (as if it makes any difference), then even David Cameron remains an Briton even if he made that statement in India. Makes sense, no? And tell me, do you actually think India requested him to talk like that? And how do you think this is gonna change relationship between India and UK then?

And India supported likes of Daud Khan and Mohammad Najibullah; People whom Afghans themselves till the day of today haven't forgotten. It were Northern Alliance members themselves who kept favouring India and kept inviting India for friendship, like Pakistan they didn't force themselves on us. And you also don't forget that it was also India who stayed back from the war going on between different Mujahideen Hizbs, remember? If they weren't any angels them at least they haven't killed our people either. Or do you have any proof that they have?

India never requested him. Britain wants to appease India for its own interests. Currently Britain has out-sourced many things to India but now UK wants a share in Indians economy.

India is not all evil, i am not saying that. They have good stuff about them as well. Like i said they are advanced in many fields. But we shouldn't portray them as people who are without an agenda as well. They obviously have a lot to gain in Afghanistan.

^ I know they have a lot to gain, but, till the day I see they aren't harming our people and our people are only benefiting from their presence, I will regardless only support them. Do you remember how Americans had requested India to send it's army to the South (which even borders Pakistan) and India refused to? If they truly wanted to reach their goal by war then they would have sent their army to Afghan-Pak border a very long time ago. Luckily, Indians ain't that stupid.

We should still be wary of India and not surrender everything to them. India are clever they do not want to involve themselves in sending an army to the south, because they know they will suffer. Look at how NATO has suffered and India realises they have nothing to gain by sending an army to the south.

We see the dutch have left and canada is leaving Afghanistan. WHY? Because they have more to lose by staying there and this is again not because they care about Afghans, but that they care about their own interests. No doubt Afghans need to be clever and have relations with every country in world including Pakistan. They can gain stuff from Pakistan because they have a border with them and it is a land-locked country, but they need to have CLEVER relations and never blind or one-sided friendship where they give everything to their friend and they get nothing in return

^ That's what I am saying, India is a clever country who doesn't want to solve things with war. They want to keep Afghanistan close to themselves in case they might need Afghanistan because such a thing as 'true friends' doesn't exist anywhere. All countries that are friends keep their friendship based on interest; Just like how Afghanistan gains medical and educational interest from India.

                      Dear Saifullah

The world is now saying it in blunt words whether to gain access to the Indian market or not . Pakistan is a terrorist country. It exported terrorism to Afghanistan. Pakistani proxies have been active in Kashmir though Kashmiris hate Pakistan as it is a failed state which cannot take care of its own issues and population and is interfering into the affairs of others un necessarily.

Pakistan is a hub of terrorism by all definition of terrorism. It is practicing state terrorism as it is a state owned by an army. A 22 grade officer decides the foreign and defense policy in addition to squeezing a big crunch of the budget and this is ever increasing. It has been involved in nuclear proliferation. All major terrorist attacks were either masterminded or executed from Pakistan or with the help of Pakistani military. Leave alone the rest of the world, it is a hell in which the Shia kills the sunni, the barelvi kills the deobandi, the wahabis kill the cultist Ahle sunnat and so on. Three out of four provinces have feelings of hatred and even rebellion and freedom movements are there.

It is easy to blame everything on India, Israel and other countries but the power elite in the higher echelons of power in Pakistan never introspected to find out what is wrong in their own system and state structure. In these circumstances it is no wonder that UK or other countries who are the real masters of the power elite and the brown sahibs of Pakistan tell them about their real status in their eyes. It is not nuclear teeth or military power which will win respect for Pakistan in the comity of nations but a system based on justice which ensures the equal rights to the inhabitants of a country which have been occupied by the boots in one form or another for the last 63 years.

The type of third world countries Afghanistan and Pakistan are it is but natural that the old imperialist power like UK which has been known for her crooked nature in the power politics will use every means to exploit any weakness in these south asian countries specially knowing that two countries [India and Pakistan] were their ex colonies which means they know the nature of the people.

It is therefore wise that all those steps which sabotage the peace efforts in Afghanistan should be discouraged as it will not bring anything to Pakistan except more instability in the regional politics vis a vis the world super powers which are not there to give boost to these third world countries but to enhance their interests and they cannot be blamed as it is common in the power game.

When ever anti state elements from Afghanistan such as the Peshawer Seven, Tajiks under Ahmad Shah masood, they always turn to Pakistan for help.

Pakistan has played a role in a bad way but one has to also blaime the elements from Afghanistan as well and recall their role in allowing their soil to be used for terrorism.

During the Taliban regime, most of the worlds Islamist terrorists were all given safe havens and training ground by the Afghans themselves. Its not as if the Afghans couldnt throw such people out they also got a gain from it.

                            Kind Regards
