More like the ghost of omar, wasn't the letter believed to be forged anyways? The Afghan government could have leaked stories about his death to create division among the Taliban which seems to be working so far.

Felix Kuehn, an author who has researched the Taliban for 10 years, suggested that the reports of Omar’s death could have been leaked by people within the government who seek to create fissures in the Taliban to undercut the talks. “If it is true, it would be a major issue for the peace talks, and it would be a major issue for the Taliban, because he can’t really be replaced,” Kuehn said.
Although not seen in public since US-led coalition toppled his government in 2001, Omar’s death raises questions over future of Taliban and efforts to achieve peace

Ghani seems to be using the english way of doing things; divide and conquer your enemies.

In the interview, he wasn't talking about that. His interview was challenging the American military power. Besides, he inherited a destroyed Afghanistan who he brought stability to that neither the Soviets nor the Americans could. The illiterate man accomplished what the two most powerful superpowers the world had ever seen in history couldnt.

      Dont underestimate simple people.

The death was leaked out by a faction of the taliban who questioned Omars blessing of the peace talks because most people were surprised that he would do that. Since they demanded it from Omar himself instead of through Mansoor and Mansoor couldnt produce Omar, they speculated he was dead.

The Afghan Gov was clueless because it is evident by Ghani thanking Omar for giving his blessing for the peace talks.
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani expressed gratitude to Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Mohammad Omar for his statement issued on the occasion of Eid

Yes, he shocked people alright. With his utterly inhuman level of apathy towards his own people and the land where he was born. He claims to be doing it for the sake of Islam but where is his compassion and sense of pride towards his own innocent people when they are starving and in need of compassion?? Where is the Islam?? He can protect Osama bin laden but not afghans.
That's hypocrisy and people like you who don't learn from history or understand when you get ****ed over won't see or understand it. It's simple as that which is why I have nothing to discuss with you.

We are all products of our environment. The reason Mullah Omar was leader was because people hungered for a person that could bring stability and stamp out corruption with an iron fist. Any law was better than no law.

What you fail to realize is that the country was in chaos with no law. Barbarity existed from 92-96 and the taliban was the answer to that barbarity. That answer came from the people.

I think the Kabul regime will keep talking about this for a year. It makes sense for them to do so since there is not much good news for them nowadays. It is smart PR.

The announcement of the death of Mullah Omar has not changed anything on the ground. It also has not changed President Obama's decision for a full US withdrawal. Neither has it resulted in any reversal of ANA/ALP defeats. They continues to lose territory on a regular basis.

yeah?? It has been at least 20 years since they first took over the country. Why did he not learn from his mistakes once?? Why can't anyone who claims to be the product of a messed up environment not see that the path that they are on is wrong?? Why couldn't he gather up afghan's and ask them what they wanted changed in their society??
Take your lame excuses and feed them to someone of your own mentality. You can all have a pity party over it.
Bloody useless ****tards. Unlike you, I wasn't sleeping in 1996 and am surely not turning a blind eye towards the matter now.
They say, there are men who build up societies and men who bring them down. Your type is the bringing them down type. You have nothing to show for the 20 years worth of war that you have been fighting for. Not even a rough draft.
The guy interviewing him asks him what his plans are for the afghan people when the USA starts bombing them and mullah Omar's reply is. "Hmm, uumm, we will see what happens. God is great."

It's such a pity. I actually liked that name.
I am going to watch tv now. Don't think my silence is due to not having an answer for you.

are you talking about this part?
VOA: But aren't you afraid for the people, yourself, the Taliban, your country?

Omar: Almighty God... is helping the believers and the Muslims. God says he will never be satisfied with the infidels. In terms of worldly affairs, America is very strong. Even if it were twice as strong or twice that, it could not be strong enough to defeat us. We are confident that no one can harm us if God is with us.

VOA: You are telling me you are not concerned, but Afghans all over the world are concerned.

Omar: We are also concerned. Great issues lie ahead. But we depend on God's mercy. Consider our point of view: if we give Osama away today, Muslims who are now pleading to give him up would then be reviling us for giving him up... Everyone is afraid of America and wants to please it. But Americans will not be able to prevent such acts like the one that has just occurred because America has taken Islam hostage. If you look at Islamic countries, the people are in despair. They are complaining that Islam is gone. But people remain firm in their Islamic beliefs. In their pain and frustration, some of them commit suicide acts. They feel they have nothing to lose.
Those answers are poetic. Its just that you don't understand them. You understand poetry about drunk in love but you are not a deep thinker when simple people talk.

What he is saying is that people who stand for truth could never be defeated in principle even if they are killed, they still win. To him the issue wasn't about one man(OBL), it was about the principle of due process that the accuser has to provide proof before guilt. This principle is universal.

Socrates says the same thing when he is executed but everyone think he is a great man when he says it because he is a white man.

Perhaps someone may say, But surely, Socrates, after you have left us you can spend the rest of your life in quietly minding your own business.

This is the hardest thing of all to make some of you understand. If I say that this would be disobedience to God, and that is why I cannot 'mind my own business,' you will not believe that I am serious. If on the other hand I tell you that to let no day pass without discussing goodness and all the other subjects about which you hear me talking and examining both myself and others is really the very best thing that a man can do, and that life without this sort of examination is not worth living, you will be even less inclined to believe me. Nevertheless that is how it is, gentlemen, as I maintain, though it is not easy to convince you of it. Besides, I am not accustomed to think of myself as deserving punishment.

Well, gentlemen, for the sake of a very small gain in time you are going to earn the reputation-- and the blame from those who wish to disparage our city--of having put Socrates to death, 'that wise man'-- because they will say I am wise even if I am not, these people who want to find fault with you. If you had waited just a little while, you would have had your way in the course of nature. You can see that I am well on in life and near to death. I am saying this not to all of you but to those who voted for my execution, and I have something else to say to them as well.

No doubt you think, gentlemen, that I have been condemned for lack of the arguments which I could have used if I had thought it right to leave nothing unsaid or undone to secure my acquittal. But that is very far from the truth. It is not a lack of arguments that has caused my condemnation, but a lack of effrontery and impudence, and the fact that I have refused to address you in the way which would give you most pleasure. You would have liked to hear me weep and wail, doing and saying all sorts of things which I regard as unworthy of myself, but which you are used to hearing from other people. But I did not think then that I ought to stoop to servility because I was in danger, and I do not regret now the way in which I pleaded my case. I would much rather die as the result of this defense than live as the result of the other sort. In a court of law, just as in warfare, neither I nor any other ought to use his wits to escape death by any means.

In battle it is often obvious that you could escape being killed by giving up your arms and throwing yourself upon the mercy of your pursuers, and in every kind of danger there are plenty of devices for avoiding death if you are unscrupulous enough to stick at nothing. But I suggest, gentlemen, that the difficulty is not so much to escape death; the real difficulty is to escape from doing wrong, which is far more fleet of foot. In this present instance I, the slow old man, have been overtaken by the slower of the two, but my accusers, who are clever and quick, have been overtaken by the faster--by iniquity. When I leave this court I shall go away condemned by you to death, but they will go away convicted by truth herself of depravity and wickedness. And they accept their sentence even as I accept mine. No doubt it was bound to be so, and I think that the result is fair enough. . . .

A divided insurgency is more dangerous than a united one. Just look at history and see what happened after the Najib gov fell. It was pure barbarity.

He was a total failure . No body saw him for decades. Great leaders live among their followers. God was not with him that is why he was extirpated. He was a Wahabi nut so no spirutuality. His Afghanistan was a prison so safe but no freedom.
