  • Wheat Crop Replaces Helmand’s Poppy

Agriculture is critical to Afghanistan’s food security and a key driver for its economic growth. Farmers in Southern Helmand province are growing more wheat, and cultivating less poppy compared to previous years. The Afghan government, with the help and cooperation of USAID and United Nations, has come together to create incentives for farmers to reduce the cultivation of poppies.
USAID programs are designed to provide farmers with viable economic alternatives to the cultivation of poppies. U.S. assistance to Afghanistan’s agricultural sector focuses on creating jobs, increasing incomes and productivity, enhancing food security, creating export markets and strengthening the Afghan government’s ability to promote broad-based growth.
