  • Islamic State seizes territory from the Taliban, for the first time

SURKH DEWAL, Afghanistan: Fighters loyal to Islamic State have seized substantial territory in Afghanistan for the first time, witnesses and officials said, wresting areas in the east from rival Taliban insurgents in a new threat to stability.

Witnesses who fled fighting in Nangarhar province said that hundreds of insurgents pledging allegiance to Islamic State pushed out the Taliban, scorching opium poppy fields that help to fund the Taliban's campaign to overthrow the Afghan government.

They also distributed directives purportedly from Islamic State's Middle East-based chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, although it was not clear whether he issued them for the Afghan theatre or if previous edicts may have been translated.

Local officials said fighters following IS have seized some territory from the Taliban in at least six of 21 Nangarhar districts.

They are Kot, Achin, Deh Bala, Naziyan, Rodat and Chaparhar, according to provincial council chief Ahmad Ali Hazrat and Nangarhar member of parliament Haji Hazrat Ali. Local army spokesman Noman Atefi said IS had established a presence in "seven or eight" districts.

Battles between the rival militants are ongoing in Khogyani and Pachir Agam districts, they said.

While the central government controls the vast majority of Afghanistan, events in Nangarhar are ominous for security forces struggling to contain the Taliban insurgency after most NATO forces withdrew six months ago.

IS supporters have proved ruthless, reportedly beheading several Taliban commanders, and IS' success in taking over swathes of Iraq and Syria underlines the risks to Afghanistan.

Government officials and the US-led training force question whether IS can gain a significant foothold in Afghanistan, given that direct links with the Middle East have not been proven and the Taliban remains dominant.

However, IS loyalists in Nangarhar are described as organised and well funded.

Under the shade of a mud wall in a makeshift refugee camp in Surkh Dewal outside Jalalabad city, about 30 men recalled encounters with IS fighters. The areas they come from are considered too dangerous for journalists to visit.

Abdul Wali, a green-eyed refugee from Achin in his 20s, said he listened to foreign fighters preaching in Arabic in local mosques through translators.

"They tell them about Islam and what people should do and should not do," Wali said.

IS fighters also distribute pamphlets "to warn the people against many crimes", said tribal elder Haji Abdul Hakim from Kot district.

One letter smuggled from Pachir Agam district was purportedly from Baghdadi.

"All Mujahideen fighters are invited to carry out this holy war under one flag, which is the Islamic State," it said.

    "Thieves and thugs"

The Taliban, who issued their own warning to IS not to interfere in Afghanistan, acknowledged losing ground in Nangarhar, but said their rivals were not Islamic State.

"They are thieves and thugs ... We will soon clear those areas and free the villagers," said Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid. The movement ruled Afghanistan from the mid-1990s until 2001, when a US-led campaign helped oust it from power.

Witnesses said IS fighters had established a stricter regime in Nangarhar than the Taliban, who, while still harsh, softened their rule to gain popular support, said Malek Jan, a tribal elder who fled Spinghar, another affected area.

"They (IS) burned poppy fields in Shadal village and banned shops from selling cigarettes," Jan said.

Opium smuggling and taxing poppy production are key sources of Taliban revenue.

IS loyalists in Nangarhar appeared to have other sources of money. Several people said they had plenty of cash, and some heard militants were selling gold, unusual for the area.

It is unclear where the money is coming from.

While there is little evidence of direct links between IS in the Middle East and militants fighting under its banner in Afghanistan, officials in Kabul worry that money and personnel may begin to flow, taking the war to a new level.

The NATO-led military assistance force said it viewed reports of more money flowing to IS offshoots as "exaggerated", spokesman Col. Brian Tribus said.

He added NATO had "not seen any indication" that IS had completely driven out the Taliban from parts of Nangarhar, and said any foreign fighters were likely to be global jihadists established in the region, and not newcomers.

    Afghan forces holding back?

Government forces in Nangarhar confirmed clashes between the Taliban and IS offshoots, but army spokesman Atefi said they were not targeting IS militants.

Achin's district chief, Malek Islam, also said Afghan forces were not confronting IS fighters, who he said were "almost everywhere in the district", but were targeting the Taliban.

"They (IS) haven't attacked us, and we haven't engaged them either," he said.

Islam spoke by phone from Achin's district centre, which the government holds despite having limited control beyond, as is the case in several districts in Afghanistan's east and south.

Interior Minister Noor ul-Haq Olomi, however, said police had engaged the militants.

"We have launched a couple of clearance operations in some districts of Nangarhar and we will continue to do so to deny any terrorist group territory," Olomi said in a statement.

Michael Kugelman, a South Asia scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in Washington, said while most Afghan militants remained loyal to the Taliban, the IS "brand" of more brutal tactics appealed to some younger fighters.

Adding money into the mix could add to the attraction.

"For some hardened and impressionable radicals, bling could be as appealing as barbarity," he said.
"They (IS loyalists) came in on many white pickup trucks mounted with big machine guns and fought the Taliban. The Taliban could not resist and fled," said Haji Abdul Jan, a tribal elder from Achin district.

Jan, who saw the early June clashes before fleeing to the provincial capital of Jalalabad, said some villagers welcomed the new arrivals.

"Unlike the Taliban, they (IS) don't force villagers to feed and house them. Instead, they have lots of cash in their pockets and spend it on food and luring young villagers to join them."

Their accounts are the clearest sign yet that, beyond a few defections by low-level Taliban leaders and sporadic attacks, Islamic State sympathisers pose a more persistent threat.

IS loyalists, mostly former Taliban disillusioned by the movement's unsuccessful bid to return to power in Kabul, are accompanied by dozens of foreign fighters, witnesses said.

The IS's black flag has been hoisted in some areas, and foreign fighters preach in mosques through translators.

The identity of the non-Afghan insurgents is not known. Hundreds of militants from around the world already hide out along the Afghan-Pakistan border.

lol. Afghan Daesh is actually a threat to the ISI because they are an independent Pashtun movement that the Punjabis have not managed to control or infiltrate yet.

Daesh in Afghanistan is growing because ashram Ghandi wants them to serve as a rival force against the Taliban. The Kabul government's strategy is the same as dr najibullah's strategy 25 years ago.

Najibullah's use to pay cash money and supply weapons to rival factions of jihadis in order to weaken them.

Karzai and now Ghandi have been doing the same thing. First they propped up arbakis. Now they are propping up daesh.

                    From USA/UK as well!

The world is grey and very complicated. But to make a general assumptions the most powerful players and their pawns I would say.

USA/NATO/Israel/EU and their puppet states Qatar, Saudi baboonia, porkistan, UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Japan, South Korea, Philippines semi Afghanistan etc VS BRICS + their puppet states Cuba, Venezuela etc. Iran is a joker right now. They are a independent regional power that makes countries like, Israel, USA, UK, Saudi Baboonia, Porkistan etc **** on their pants. Look where Iran is today after those powers throws everything at them with Sanctions for 40 years. Saddam's Iraq piss on themselves after few sanctions. Not surprised so much that region used to be super power from Achameneids to Sassanids and beyond. But I am impressed how the leadership of Iran have tight control over their population and have them somehow united almost as one body and one mind. That is what I want for Afghanistan/Pashtunistan minus the arabisation, and the ones that doesn't really belong there of course!

You realise, you are talking from the bull's ass right? How could the people of Afghanistan/Ariana survive its more than 5000-8000 year of its RICH and powerful history? How could it survive and DEFEND off hordes of barbaric invasions from Alexander, the Arabs, mongolism-turks, Punjabis, English savages etc. And in modern time within 40 years fight against 2 super powers it barely can hold off. It has devastated and destroyed our WHOLE Noble Pashtun REGION!

It seems that you think Red cross, UN, etc was available 5000-80 years ago? Gimme a break please, it make some people here laugh at you! I am not blaming the devastation of my noble lands and people solely on the foreigners but we got a lot of traitors and
parasites just because of the different ethnicity living inside Afghanistan
today. There is no clear unification if you look, and agendas/ideology's are to diverse.

The noble and powerful ancestors of mine should never allowed these foreign people settle here on the first place and give them freedom to shape our noble lands. Surely they don't deserve today. With all these ethnic groups repaying Pashtuns for its hospitality and mercy with a knife on the back.

Afghanistan has not ALWAYS been lived of foreign AID. We don't even need it, because IT MAKES US WEAK. Look at IRAN it become more strong than ever with all the sanctions against it. "Iran supress its own people" Give me a break, I talked to many Iranians, and majority knows its necessary for the greater good or the foreigners will divide and eat them like they done to other countries specially Afghanistan. Only some Iranian faggots, traitors, and Shah parast who like YOLO style western style is against it.

In the 19 century, when Russia and British filth played the Great Game Loy Afghanistan was the chessboard. They corrupted and wanted to BUY Loy Afghanistan, and mostly UK cut off Loy Afghanistan's resources lines etc. Even had 3 huge invasion war Against Loy Afghanistan where they lost DEARLY! The "Mighty" British Empire who the sun never set had its WAR MACHINE raped by the noble AFGHANS not once BUT 3 major times, like EVERY single barbaric invasions before it. Mostly I blame the coward panjabis/hindus today's porkistanis that was in their army for their looses, very easy competition for the noble Pashtun warriors.

Please you seems to be some kind of brainwashed European that some how thinks Afghanistan or its PEOPLE IS SOMEHOW WEAK. Well let me CLEAR this for you. Afghanistan/Pashtunistan and my ancient family line have survived and surpassed thousands of empires/states with its noble cultural, language, traditions and mostly of its homogeneous ethnicity INTACT! Even with 80+ nations inside Afghanistan today, it will survive this bloody 100 year bad luck time line and the pure Pashtuns will live on with pride, honour, and its SOUL INTACT, despite how the rest of the world is being shaped by the Americanised Hollywood freak new globalisation.

TO be exactly CLEAR, there is NOT one single COUNTRY on this planet could survived the invasions of UK, SOVIET and NATO/USA + 78 more nations in the past 100 years. They lost all their true identity, whole state was dissolved and made into new artificial state etc.

Yes we lost some part of our noble lands from our influence because of porkis/british empire in 1948, but its seems mostly cowards live there today, so its not a huge loss, just the noble land is more valuable than all its identity crises people. The Most beautiful thing is that, it can always be repopulated by noble ones later. And you know rich Pashtuns, with 8-15 good nurtured kids, it will take just 5 generations.

So, what did Afghanistan do TO DESERVE THIS? Because we are free people who doesn't take it in the ass by some powerful foreigners we must be punished with this. I will tell you we will never forget these acts on the Afghan/Pashtun people and will repay it 1000 times to all the guilty and their future family lines, let it take 1000 years. It is one of my legacies I will leave when I pass this earth.

The future looks bright for the one who plans for it.

Afghans/Pashtuns will never forget injustice and this time it will not be an eye for an eye for my legacy. It will be 1000 eyes for ever single one eye done to my people.
To Paradise, with Pakhto, I will go.

simply put, most of our narrative is made up and historically inaccurate with no empirical evidence in support of it.

i.) There's no such thing as a 5000 year old Afghanistan, Even the word "Stan" is recent and borrowed from Turkish.

ii.) Ariana was a reference term for a region inhabited by various Arian tribes. There's no suggestion that there was an actual empire called Ariana anywhere in history. It may even be anachronistic since no one really knows it became vogue to use the term.

iii.) It couldn't defend against Alexander, It's true there were pockets of resistance, but if you mean "Ariana" as in the area now encompassing, Herat, Kandahar, Balkh, Farah, Ghor etc. etc. etc. .....Alexander controlled that, and his predecessors the Seleucids ruled it for a few hundred years until the Parthians, who were Not-Pashtuns or Afghans overthrew it. Parthians spoke Middle Persian. There is some suggeston that possibly Paktiawals were never under the full control of Alexander, but this is most likely mythologized because the actual definitive existence of Pashtuns as a distinct ethnic group has not been confirmed during this era.

iv) Turks ......did you forget about the Saljuks? They had their throne IN Ghazni, Pashtuns willingly served them as soldiers. This is acknowledged by AlBiruni, Bayhaqi etc. etc. etc.

v.) Punjabis, look at Afghanistan right now....and that's all the evidence you need to know this is false.

vi) English ....OK , now this was a hard and undeniable example of success but only militarily Politically Afghans Kings were their vassals asking them for money ...i.e. FOREiGN AID

But for the most part you live in a story book fantasy, not reality.
