  • Baloch-Pakhtun rivalry rears it's head at CPEC meeting; NP wants all Afghans deported

    Thursday’s all-parties conference (APC) was meant to smoothen over differences between the government and the rest of the political parties in parliament over the China-Pak Economic Corridor (CPEC).

    However, unwitting remarks by one of the participants took the discussion in an unexpected direction, as a debate on the decades-old issue of Balochistan’s Baloch population versus its Pakhtun population, reared its head again.

    When National Party chief Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo was given the floor to express his concerns over the corridor, he took well over 20 minutes highlighting importance of the CPEC’s western route, which connects Khunjerab to Gwadar through Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

    As other participants impatiently awaiting their turn to speak on the matter, Mr Bizenjo took many Pakhtun leaders, present in the meeting, by surprise when he, out of nowhere, asked the government to address the issue of Afghan refugees settled in Balochistan.

    Mr Bizenjo wasn’t available for comment following the APC, but a participant of the meeting quoted him as saying, “I request the government to repatriate Afghans settled in Balochistan as they are disturbing the demographics of the province,” he said.

    With more investment coming into Balochistan under the CPEC, “I fear more Pakhtuns will come to Balochistan in search of jobs, squeezing the Baloch population further,” Mr Bizenjo went on to say, adding that the issue of Afghan refugees and unregistered Pakhuns must be settled before the census, which the government has announced to hold next March.

    Unable to contain himself, Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai interjected and sarcastically took Mr Bizenjo to task. “By repatriating Pakhtuns to Afghanistan, you mean to say all of us Pakhtuns sitting in the meeting should also leave the country,” Mr Achakzai was quoted as asking the NP leader. “Asfandyar Wali Khan, Aftab Sherpao and Pervez Khattak all have their roots in Afghanistan. Wali Khan’s ancestors are buried there and there are many families who continue to live on both sides of the Pak-Afghan border. You want to send all of us to Afghanistan,” the incensed PkMAP leader asked.

    This tirade had participants chuckling and left Mr Bizenjo stunned. Both PkMAP and NP are, in fact, coalition partners in the Balochistan ruling alliance.

    Confirming the incident, PML-Q Senator Mushahid Hussain said the Baloch versus Pakhtun issue in Balochistan was an old one and reared its head at various forums. Recalling the proceedings of a sub-committee which he headed in 2005, he said, “Our committee suggested a parity (50-50) formula between Balochs and Pakhuns when it comes to distribution of resources and representation in assemblies.”

    Last time when the Gwadar port came to the fore under General Pervez Musharraf, Balochs nationalists raised the issue and objected to non-Balochs coming to the area with heavy investment.

    They also didn't allow refugees in when Zarb-e-Azb started. These NP guys are allied with the establishment and can hardly be called nationalists.

      Recent massacre of over 20 Pashtun bus passengers by Baloch separatists in Mastung travelling to Karachi seems to point that they are now trying to react against demographic changes, fears of Afghans becoming majority in Balochistan & Quetta.

        It's not just establishment, all Baloch nationalists whether Bugtis or Marris or ordinary Makranis, they want Afghans deported; even educated Baloch separatists want Afghans/Pakhtuns to leave Baloch areas, and they include Quetta/Shaal valley too.

        Recent massacre of Pashtun by BLA militants isn't by the state, same forces that slaughtered Punjabi/Sindhi laborers

        BTW Hasil Bizenjo is son of Ghaus Baksh Bizenjo aka Baba-e-Balochistan, so they are anything but puppet

          like you don't want them to be deported? i support deportation of Afghan too.
          Baloch are struggling for independence, Pashtun must understand that. Mr. PMAP helped more than 1 lakh Afghan to get pakistani nationality and are now settled in balochistan. Mr achakzai is happy with that it add to his political base, Baloch are now minority in Baluchistan their grieves are legit.

          on a side note there is a possibility of deep state involvement. After failing to suppress the Baloch insurgency through brutal killing directly and through the Islamic terrorisam maybe a new strategy in place. ignite a civil war between Pashtun and Baloch. though i highly doubt that.

            Same Baloch rebels slaughtered Seraiki and Sindhi laborers just 1 month ago, same baloch rebels are killing Hindkowan,Gujjar and Punjabi settlers who have been settled for 2-3 generations, some even 4 generations in Balochistan; you don't need to blame establishment for everything when ethnofascists are enough, just watch videos of Brahamdag Bugti and Khair Bakhs Marri threatening Pashtuns and all socalled 'migrants'.

            BTW NP do not want separation, they believe in federation, so Bizenjo just wants resource and province for Baloch, no other ethnicity

                You in your hatered of Pakistanis/Punjabis are turning blind. Yes pakhtuns most understand that they are only getting killed because of greater good that is Balochistan liberation. Who cares if pakhtuns are natives of upper/north Balochistan and even Quetta.

                And Afghans shouldn't have been given illegal CNIC on that I agree with you. But Nadra is already working on that and have blocked 100,000 CNIC from all over Pakistan. And deporting Afghans is not as easy as you think it is. At best Pakistan can make things difficult for them, blocking illegal CNIC, etc

                  No quetta is not, neither they claim it also loralai is pashtun dominated region and historically it is pashtun area, but sibi is baloch area and they are dominant there.

                  whatever there is a highly possibility of Baloch and pashtun ethnic war, pashtun before 2013 don't have any political power but now they are dominating it. IF PMAP and ANP both nationalist can't digest each other, then how can NP PMAP and separatist will.

                  see Mr. bizengo remarks, it happened just 2 days ago.

                    Baluch nationalism is now literally non-existent. Only a few tribes vote for independance like the Bugti, Marri and Rind's. Other Baloch are okay with their current status in Pakistan while others are not into politics at all and don't they think they are strong enough to lead their own country.

                    Not to mention there are more Pashtuns in Baluchistan since the Baluch are heavily migrating to the Arabian Gulf in waves. So its their fault that they are a minority since they can't seem to stay in their country and these NP guys are a joke. Go ahead, deport Afghan refugees living there but you can't deport indigenous Pakhtuns who have been living there for centuries now.

                        Which my point still stands corrected, most of the separate leaders belong to the Bugti and Marri tribe and mostly gain support from members of those tribes.

                        Also the first sentence of your article proves their actions were caused by a rape of a woman, not for independence.

                        Baluchistan is in the throes of the fifth and longest running insurgency since 1947. Triggered in 2005 by the rape of a lady doctor allegedly by an army officer in Sui, it was exacerbated by the death of Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti in an Army operation in August 2006.

                        The insurgency is hardly strong, they lack numbers and are not all united. This comment agrees what what i am saying;

                        KHURRAM Sabout 5 hours ago

                        The population of baloch in Pakistan is around 7 million and these groups have strength which range from 2000 to 3000. Means they do not enjoy widespread support of Baloch people. Yet every effort should be made to persuade them to shun violence and seek rights through peaceful democratic means.
                        Either way, these guys don't have all the same motives unlike the Pak taliban.

                          Baloch uprising is not something new, it happened in past, but government was able to defuse them .this time it started from a rape of Baloch women, Akbar bugti picked arms, musharraf killed them,and a new chapter of Baloch insurgency took it course.

                          The insurgency is hardly strong, they lack numbers and are not all united. This comment agrees what what i am saying;

                          this time insurgency is very strong, and have spread to most of the balochistan. more than 10000 activists became victim of the govt kill and dump policy at the hands of pro govt death squards.
                          according to some sources BLA numbered 10000, but this may not be correct. anyway number does not matter, they have the support of most Baloch people, it started in 2004 and you can see Balochistan is no go area even now. this time it's the student involved.
