During the Taliban regime, stadiums in Afghanistan were mainly used for executions, stoning and mutilations. It is only safe to say that Afghanistan has come a long way and some of the changes taking place today were simply unimaginable over a decade ago. The same stadiums are used for sport events such as soccer and cricket. In 2013, Afghanistan’s soccer team brought home South Asian Football Federation championship trophy. It is worth mentioning that Afghanistan has recently re-emerged on the world soccer scene after decades of war and insurgency. In 2014, Afghanistan’s qualification for world cup cricket sparked scenes of joy and celebration for Afghans in Afghanistan and those living abroad. Afghanistan was able to beat Scotland, one of the 10 top teams member in the world cricket cup.Afghanistan has climbed from the bottom rung of international competition to cricket's biggest global event in five years. They have done so against a backdrop of war, and with limited facilities.
