Pashtun filmmaker Samar Khan honored at United Nations event

Pashtun filmmaker Samar Minallah Khan was honoured at the sixth annual Diane von Furstenberg (DVF) Awards held on April 25th at the United Nations Headquarters. The awards were created in 2010 by fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation to honor and support extraordinary women.

The honorees at the United Nations event also included journalist and human rights activist Melanne Verveer who is the first-ever ambassador-at-large for women’s issues at the US Department of State; former US Representative Gabby Giffords and founder of ‘Women in Business’ Adi Tafuna’i.

“I am so privileged to know them and to shed light on their important accomplishments,” Diane told Style.com.

The event, which is held annually, was also attended by US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, actresses Dakota Fanning, Maggie Gyllenhaal and supermodel Naomi Campbell.

“If we just look at women as victims we will never see them for the leaders they are,” Verveer told the crowd at the event. “The situation for women in the world is not what it should be. And we are regressing,” she added, citing violence against women and human trafficking as pressing concerns. “Let us remember, if we have a voice, it is our obligation and privilege to use that voice for those who have none,” she said.

They're the other half of the population. Fighting for their rights is important if you want to live in the 21st century, instead of being a Neanderthal.

if you dedicate your life to educating a population and the only way they hear of you is by you receiving some fancy assed award, you are not doing your job right.

Mr. Jogian and Mr. tripletrouble What is Pakistan? It is neither a particular culture nor a specific dress nor a language and nor ethnicity. It is merely the name of a geography arbitrarily fixed by Sir Mutamer Durand and Redcliffe for their imperial interests that later they handed to the mercenaries they created and trained for their colonial wars the world over.

There was no Pakistan in history before 1947 and every body was Hindustani.

Ultimately we are what we really are; Pashtuns, Punjabis, Sindhis, Baluchis, etc.

You are Punjabi ultimately; she is a Pashtun; that is a fact you cannot conceal with transitional notions like Pakistani etc.

That doesn't mean we cannot live together.

What I mean is the basis of Pakisyani nationhood is constitution and nothing which alas Punjabi est has trampled under its feet time and again.

we are multicultural country, with some commonalities, most our languages are part of Indo-European family, almost all Pakistani women wear shalwar kameez with it's own variation; Pukhtun have a bit unique variation but still similar pattern; the balochi dress is very close to shalwar kameez

All Pakistani mard wear shalwar kurta, so that is anoher commonality

They only drew the boundaries, borders always get drawn in history but Pakistan is an idea in Iqbal's word or in Great Imran Khan word, even Hyrbyar marri in interview admitted that pakistan was a "soch" or "nafsiath" but he don't share that idea so that's why he's opposed, so don't take away fact we're an idea, and you can never kill ideas said great Malala

yes but proto-pakistan existed, names change but land is the same, we inherit that history of our forefathers, like afghanistan didn't exist as a name thousands of years ago but they inherit the history of proto populations.

Republic of india no exist before '47, it's British india and before british came there was no country or nation call india or "hindustani", hindustani was just regional label foreigners like Arabs and Persians gave and Europeans gave name of India, but were never one unified entity or nation except 3 times in history(maurya, mughal and british rule) but majority of history we were separate,
Ultimately we are what we really are; Pashtuns, Punjabis, Sindhis, Baluchis, etc.
yeah we have ethnic identity and then national identity which is Pakistani, identities can be multi-tiered
You are Punjabi ultimately; she is a Pashtun; that is a fact you cannot conceal with transitional notions like Pakistani etc.
i'm hindkowan, but doesn't matter, Samar lives in Isloo she is from the urban stock of Pakistan who have come with new production of Pan-Pakistani identity, she have more in common with me and tilla than with some kabuli or qandahari or even kabylie

That doesn't mean we cannot live together.
of course, even before pakistan was made or before brits came, interactions and migrations always existed, we coexisted under different empries
What I mean is the basis of Pakisyani nationhood is constitution and nothing which alas Punjabi est has trampled under its feet time and again.
There are little things that make up Pakistaniyat but u don't seem to notice; when Pakistani cricket team come in sabz uniform in give adrenalin pump to whole country, two months ago i was watching Pakistan football qualifier against yemen for world cup, and even baloch friends who weren't patriotic were rooting for the shaheens to win, there are other things like shared expierinece of living or growing up in a country and stuff

Issues exist and highliting them is important, but i get it from where you are coming from. Most of the times "white people" only want to see that part of the world. Thats why white people loved "slumdog millionaire" but will never watch random bollywood movie.

If one reads foreigners blog who visit Pakistan. They will not like Islamabad, instead they like less developed and dirtier city beside ISB which Rawalpindi.
