It's interesting to read that Islamist factions, mostly Pashtuns, by and large support Pakistani interests in Afghanistan. Makes you wonder who they are really fighting for.

This is such a crock of ****. Afghanistan did recognize Pakistan a few months after the creation of that country and recognizing a country means all its border and boundaries. It was only after Ali Jenah speech regarding FATA that Afghanistan realize Pakistan was not a new Muslim state but a successor of British Raj that will continue to follow the British Raj forward policy regarding Afghanistan. Thus in 1949 Afghanistan convened a Loya Jirga and officially declared that they no longer recognized the 1893 Durand Line Agreement, the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1905, the Treaty of Rawalpindi of 1919 and the Anglo-Afghan Treaty of 1921. Sadly Afghanistan policy towards Pakistan has have been defensive, the ruler in Kabul were more interested in continuation of their rule then rejoining of Pashtonistan.

The insurgency became popular after the commies took over. Before that it wasn't really anything but Rabani, Masood, and Hekmatyar with a few followers.

It was offensive at first, it became defensive after the commies took over and set the stage for the soviet invasion.

Do you have a source for the jinnah speech and the 1949 loya jirga.

“You have also expressed your desire that the benefit, such as your allowances and khassadari, that you have had in the past and are receiving, should continue. Neither my Government nor I have any desire to modify the existing arrangements except, in consultation with you, so long as you remain loyal and faithful to Pakistan.”
If you read the between the line, Jinnah is explicitly stating the continuation of British raj’s Forward policy. Political agents, allowance and khassadari, keeping in place the Frontier Crimes Regulations a set of brutal British laws designed to deny the Pashtun peoples of the tribal areas of basic legal and political rights. The FCR allows for collective punishment, indefinite detention, no right of appeals, and cases are heard by civil servants of the Federal government. The FCR was implemented to bring the oft rebellious tribes to heel and should have been repealed immediately after Pakistan gained Independence. Instead Jinnah changed nothing, and no other leader since has either. To this day the people of the Tribal Areas are denied basic rights and are not truly a part of Pakistan but rather ruled by Pakistan.

            Loya Jirga of 1949.
