  • Pakistani leaders versus Indian leaders - degeneracy versus integrity

Below is a video clip of interviews with Iskander Mirza of Pakistan and Nehru of India(1950s); one, Mirza is an invented leader, the descendent of Mir Jafar clan the traitors who collaborated with the British East India Company against the native people at Palasy (1785) and the other, Nehru, is a real genuine leader that arose from native society and represented its aspirations and aspirations of all the oppressed people around the world.

Notice how Nehru speaks of British imperialism and in favour of Egypt unlike Iskander Mirza whose talk and attire reflect British-imitating elitism and sycophancy that characterised his class in service of the imperial masters that most of the Muslim League leadership came from.

The dress of both the leaders express the contrast not even in characters and roles but also the cultural orientation.

Such degenerate undignified characters also arose in Pashtuns, e.g., one was Ali Kuli Khan that became political agent in India under British administration whose progeny is happy serving any master provided it is fed properly though may also sometimes talk of tribal lineage to prop up their ego.

You should first clean your filthy Punjo mouth before trying to hurl aspersions at great freedom fighters and anti-imperialist leaders like Ghafar Khan and Nehru. I can see the ping of jealousy deep inside your lot because you could not produce a leader of even common character and integrity what to talk of the lofty personalities like Ghafar Khan and Nehru.

for India I would say Indira Gandhi & jawahar lal Nehru along with Atal bihari Vajpayee were great leaders , for Pakistan I would say hussain shaheed suhrawardi & zulfiqar Ali Bhutto /Benazir Bhutto & for Bangladesh I think HM Ershad was the best

One can see the noble intentions and views that Nehru and Ghafar Khan had about FATA and its inhabitants in the following letter by Nehru to Olaf Caroe about his visit to FATA that tripledouble has referred to as above.

The visit was spoiled by a conspiracy hatched by Muslim League, British allied tribal maliks and political agents, and British authorities under Olaf Caroe. All these people wanted the continuation of the old system British for their future imperial designs about the region, tribal Maliks and political agents for the continuation of their privileges, and Muslim Leaguers as croneys of the British Raj.

If the reforms suggested by Nehru has been enforced FATA would not be in the situation and condition as today.

The Paki empire is continuing with the colonial system as indicated by the recent agreement it tried to impose on the people of FATA.

                  520 page 814 (excerpts)
Pandit Nehru to Sir O.Caroe(North-West Frontier Province)
                  Enclosure to No. 520

                  NEW DELHI, 24 October 1947

Note on my tour in the Tribal Areas of the North-West Frontier (October 16th to 21st, 1946) *see note below
                  ..

                  6. In considering the future, two basic factors have to be borne in mind.
                  (1) It is probable that land routes between India and Afghanistan will develop in importance. India, which for a long stretch of years has been more or less isolated on its land frontier, is now bound to develop closer relations with its neighbours both on the North-West and North-East. A far greater volume of trade and passenger traffic will flow in both directions. A growing air traffic across the frontier will also make a difference. It is possible also, though this will take some time, that railway lines might be constructed so as to ultimately to connect the Chinese railway system through India with the Western Asian railway system and Europe. All these factors will tend to upset the traditional economy of the Frontier Areas. They are likely to have far-reaching consequences in the social structure of the Tribes.

                  (2) It seems to me, though I speak with partial knowledge, that a class conflict is slowly developing and interests of most of the Maliks or Tribal leaders and the greater part of the population. In a sense this will be a conflict between the haves and the havenots. Any policy that is framed by us will, to some extent, have to take this into consideration.

Do we support the existing social structure, in other words do we support the semi-feudal heads as against the mass of the population, or do we help the poorer people to progress even though this might be opposed by the Maliks and their like? As far as I know, official policy thus far has been to deal with and support the Maliks and we have ignored the others. Probably this was the only feasible policy in the past. It was much simpler to deal with them; but it may not be so simple in the future and we may have to choose. I have no doubt that we should not try to preserve in any way the same feudal structure or to help the Maliks to retain their special positon where this comes in the way of the development of the people generally. Probably our system of paying allowances to the Tribes is chiefly beneficial to these Maliks.

                  7. This system of paying allowances has been rightly described as a kind of hush-money or blackmail. It may have been a lesser evil, but obviously it is something that is not desirable. It is often said that if a part of this money had been used for developing the area, a major change might have taken place by now. Apart from this, payment of money in this way is demoralising to the giver and the taker alike. Inevitably, it leads to corruption and to a lowering of the tone of the public service. Perhaps it is difficult to stop this payment suddenly, but I have no doubt that it will have to be stopped some time or other and the money utilised for better purposes which benefit the mass of the population.

                  8. It is said that any educational or like approach is resented by the Tribal people as they consider this an attempt to penetrate and infiltrate. This is understandable. Probably if the approach was made in a different way and after some kind of psychological change had taken place, it could not be so resented. An immediate approach which is likely to be appreciated and to do immense good is through the films. Naturally these films will be of an educational character. They could even be used for literacy campaigns as well as to broaden the horizon of the Pathan in regard to India and the world
                  .

The couple, Nehru and Ghaffar ,were welcomed with stones and shoes in tribal areas

                      Nehru in Waziristan

The main purpose of Nehru's visit to NWFP was to boost the morale of the Congress and push their cause on the Frontier. This was against the advice of the governor, Sir Olaf Caroe, and the Viceroy. When Nehru arrived at Peshawer Airport, he was greeted by a large and hostile league demonstration. It was an ugly situation and he had to be taken out through a back door. Nehru then visited Tribal areas.[1]

The first town in tribal territory on Nehru's itinerary was Miramshah, where he was to address a Jirga. But according to reports reaching the British, the Utmanzai Wazirs were not impressed with his pledge to 'set them free', calling out, 'why dont you speak pashto? Go back to Hindostan'. His reception at Razmak was no better. The tribesmen fired on the plane before it even arrived. Robin Hodson, who was the political agent of South Waziristan, witnessed Nehru's address to the Jirga there. 'Instead of remaining seated, to my astonishment Nehru got up and started addressing the tribesmen as though he were at a political rally, waving his arms around and marching up and down. At Jirga, it is customary to sit on the ground and the person addressing the meeting would be seated on a chair. But Nehru's manner didnt please them. Again he said that he would set them free from slavery of the British, but the reply -- in Urdu for Nehru to understand-- came: 'we are not the slaves of British and we are certainly not going to be your slaves'. Using the contemptuous word for an indian, torkunai, they said that if they had to deal with any Indian, it would be Jinnah. The meeting broke up in disorder. When Nehru was advanced upon Malak Mehr Dil Mahsood with an umbrella, it was Robin Hodson who stood in to protect him. Hodson was therefore somewhat surprised to listen to All radio India saying that political officers there had arranged a demonstration against Nehru.

Malak Mehr Dil Mahsood giving Jawahar Lal Nehru a Piece of his Mind while Political Agent Robin Hodson tries to stop the approaching Malak.

At Wana, Ahmadzai Wazirs refused to meet him, and debagged the suited and booted Hindus who went to visit him. Abdul Ghaffar Khan, who, together with Dr. Khan Sahib accompanied Nehru throughout the trip, spoke scathingly of the British officers in Waziristan, calling them 'suave and cunning'. He attributed the docility of tribesmen to the allowances given to them by the British. Nehru journeyed onto Tank and Jandola, where he met some of the smaller tribes. 'Here the tribesmen received us warmly and brought black sheep to present us', noted Ghaffar khan. Back in Peshawar, Nehru's next stop was Khyber pass, but the Afridis refused to grant usual tribal protection and the recently reconstituted Khyber Rifles were called in to protect the party against sniping and stone throwing. After tea in Torkham, they returned to Peshawar without meeting a single Afridi.[2]

The account of the details of Nehru's visit is available from a letter which the political agent of South waziristan wrote to his wife:
"Abdul Ghaffar Khan opened the proceedings by telling the Waziris that the great Nehru had heard of how they had been oppressed by the firangis and had decided to come and investigate their condition. They were poor and the new Indian government was determined to give them schools, to teach them their religion, to build hospitals and to civilize them. The Wazir spokesman replied more in grief than in anger that Abdul Ghaffar had got it all wrong. The Utmanzai Wazirs were oppressed by no one, nor did they need instruction in teaching of Islam from a man whose son had married a parsi and whose niece (Dr.Khan sahib's daughter Marium) was married to a christian. This remark infuriated Dr. Khan Sahib who called them paid toadles of the political agent. This remark was too much for the jirga who leapt to their feet in protest. Smouldering with indignation, the party then departed [to meet Mehsuds]. A Mehsud Jirga was assembled in the residency garden. Nehru spoke in Urdu. The Mahsuds probably didnt understand much. But when he said that those present were all debauched by British robbery, it was too much for old kaka. Mir Badshah's father, who in the coarse way that Mahsuds have, said 'Hindu, if the British pay us money, there's a good reason. Our private parts are of extraordinary size as you will find out to your cost before long. 'With that the old boy stumped out. The political agent tried to persuade Nehru to end his tour after this but Bacha khan begged him to continue. Things only got worse however as their car was pelted with stones, injuring the two leaders with flying glass. (Hunt and Harrison 1980:231) [3]

Mehsud tribal malaks sit in a semi-circle, listening to Nehru who is pointing a finger at them for added emphasis

                      Tribesmen walk-out

Nehru's Route is guarded by Khyber rifles, who have just driven off some tribesmen with rifle fire. The troops are now crouched in a cut by the side of the road to protect Nehru in case tribesmen return when Nehru resumes his journey

Tribesmen hurl stones at Nehru's convoy from an embankment near Landi Kotal fort
