I know very little about the current situation in Iraq, but were the Iraqi soldiers cowards when they abandon their post as soon Daesh approached? We all know there is a Sunni and Shia conflict in Iraq, so the question is, were the shia soldiers truly cowards when approached by sunni militants in sunni dominated land.
The easy answer is obviously yes, but that is only when you scratch the surface. If we go a skin deeper and think for a moment, why would shia soldiers die for sunni dominated areas. In that sense, the question will be rephrased to; were the Iraqi soldiers cowards or did they just not care about the sunni dominated areas?

I think the motivation behind fleeing probably differed for each soldier. Some might have not felt particularly motivated to defend a sunni area where many probably hated them. Others might have fled because they were afraid of being caught by ISIS; we all know that ISIS doesn't exactly abide by humanitarian law when they take POWs. watch the documentary. a few hundred ISIS fighters went into Mosul to free prisoners from a prison when they realized that the whole city was abandoned by Iraqi Shia gov forces. The population wanted them to come in.

Do you know what happened, before you assume whose a coward or not? The Iraqi platoons in Mosul was abandoned by their commanding officers and were left to fend for themselves. Since they had no leadership they had no intelligence or estimated strength and capabilities of the ISIS force on the offensive. In Camp Speicer Tikrit, the soldiers were new recruits with little to no training. They were also abandoned to deal with a much more experienced adversary. So they did what normal people would do. Put on regular clothes and leave since, without much training or leadership, why blindly stay and fight without a plan?


It is easy to look at events and question choices. It is called hindsight bias. When you believe you knew, or foreseen a conclusion after it already happened.
