  • Pashto on Google translate

Pashto is not on Google translate.

Here are some languages which are:

    SESOTHO

Language of Lesotho, under 6 million speakers.

    HMONG

Language of 4-5 million people in south-east Asia.

    CHICHEWA

Language in Zambia and adjacent countries, 12 million speakers.

All the figures above are from Wiki.

Pashto has far more speakers than any of those three above.

Chichewa is said to have 12 million and Pashto at very least has 40 million, so at the very least Pashto has 3 times more speakers.

How can we put Pashto on Google translate?

I am not Pashtun so there is only so much I can say but here are some suggestions for Toramana and others.

    1. Contact the ANP, PMAP and Qawmi Watan Party and say which of them would be able to use their cadres to achieve this.

Which ever party responds and is able to put Pashto in to Google translate will get their name down in history as the organization which made millions around the world able to translate things in to/from Pashto.

Aftab Sherpao, leader of the Qawmi Watan Party in Pakhtunkhwa.

    2. Perhaps contact the relevant ministry in the government of Afghanistan.

    3. Organize an online petition, perhaps ask for support from online Pashtun media such as Justice for Pashtuns, or even Khyberwatch TV (with around 300,000 likes) or Tolo new or anything.

I don't think it's difficult, it just requires motivation and persistency.

Having Pashto on Google is actually good for them and they'd be happy to have it, it makes them look better.

It's just on the Pashtun side there needs to be some more movement.

So perhaps this thread is pointless really if the project has started?

Can you tell me more about this translator community Luffy?

How many words do they intend to put in to the Google dictionary?

I don't know why a language spoken by over 50 million people isn't on google translate, yet you have "languages" on there like Tajik and Yiddish which aren't even languages but dialects of Farsi and Hebrew respectivily! Then you got some Africans languages on there that hardly have speakers of 1 million (not that i got anything against africans.) yet Pashto isn't "good enough" to be on there.

Furthermore, there is a petition started by fellow Pashtuns to get our language on there; https://www.change.org/p/google-tran...ogle-translate

        Sign away my friends!

I think one reason people don't really care is because thepashto.com is a popular resource, even though it's just a dictionary.

An actual translator would be better, of course. Let me see if I can get anyone from the Pashto department at Peshawar University on this. Great initiative, if things pick up.

            Please do.

            My advice.

            1. Get time deadlines if you can.

            2. Ask multiple sources (get them to compete with each other, even if it's for the sake of jealousy or a desire for recognition!) if you want/can.

Also Google translate is good for rough translations and if there is a poor translation (not uncommon) an intelligent reader can use his intelligence or common sense to work out what the translation actually means, and if not then hey it's not perfect, but it's better than nothing and hey it's free!

I'm sure there are lots of people who could help you out with that in Peshawar. Since we're talking about Peshawar University, maybe you could contact someone from the computer science department, if you haven't already?

why there is difficulties with Pashto on google translater?

                        1. Pashto has alot of dialects. Especially Pakhto vs Pashto (kh vs sh). Other differences exist as well. These dialects differ in pronounciation and also grammar to some extenct. Therefore, a certain dialect must have less speakers than the languages you mentioned. The dialectical different is the biggest reason. Should google translate use Peshawari Pashto or Ghilzai Pashto? Ofc, some officials have made a special letter than can be treated as a "kh" and a "sh" at the same time, interpreted by PAshtuns depending on their dialect. Look at Punjabi on google translate. It's purely on the Majhi dialect and we don't see Pakistani Punjabi (more people and more diverse than the sikh Punjabi), because Pakistanis don't care. Pashtuns would take offend if you exclude their dialect.

                        2. When to use pure Pashto as opposed to Pashto using borrowed words from Dari, Urdu and Arabic.

remember. about 5 million Pashtuns would speak central Ghilzai Pashto. If it go's on googgle translate, it would piss off 25 million other Pashtuns.

the Gypsy language is also a very diverse language, why it has no google translate either.

                            ic.
Where in google? That punjabi is probably sikhi punjabi which is not majhi punjabi. Majhi punjabi is only spoken in central punjab of Pakistan. Before partition couple of districts like Amristar and Gurdaspur of Indian punjab bordering also used to be majhi majority but not right now.

Today majhi dialect is only spoken in Pak punjab, its so called standard punjabi. In indian punjab they speak doabi and malwi dialects. In Pakistan these dialects are mostly spoken in Faisalabad area where lots of east punjabi muslim migrated and have maintained their original dialect.

Anyone who understand urdu can understand/learn formal majhi punjabi without much problem. But he will have hard time getting what sikhs, hindko, seraiki, paharis, jhangvi etc are saying. Those dialects/languages only native punjabi can understand. Crude versions of majhi which is spoken in rural areas is also hard to get by non-native. In fact majhi spoken in rural areas is considered crudest punjabi. Seraiki for exemple and other similar languages sound "sweet" for what ever reason.
