This is true for the period when he had power. In Taif , he was powerless preacher and had no means to retaliate.
The issue is that Muhammad as a person did many horrible things and for that there is need of strict balsphemy laws otherwise he will be the target of mockery and satire everywhere like a 50 years old man with 11 wives and one of them 9 years old.
Now that freedom of expression is very important, his personality will create a lot of problems.
