ISLAMABAD: A deep, long ditch Pakistan has been digging along its porous border with Afghanistan in Balochistan to check cross-border movement of militants will cost the national kitty around Rs14 billion, The Express Tribune has learnt. The lucrative contract to supply manpower for the strategic project has partly been given to men from an erstwhile key opponent of the Durand Line.
“In the first phase, this strategic project – 1,100-kilometre-long trench – has been initiated along Pak-Afghan border in Balochistan. In the next phase, it will be extended to the entire 2,400-plus kilometres’ long border. Three construction companies from Balochistan have been awarded the contract for supply of manpower and other arrangements,” a senior provincial official said on condition of anonymity.
After the completion of the project, travel between the two countries would be allowed only through officially-designated crossing points.
Balochistan Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani said the project was initiated more than four months ago. “The 11-foot deep and 14-foot wide ditch will be dug along the entire stretch of the border,” he said. “This strategic project was necessary to ensure strong border controls past 2014 when US-led foreign forces pull out from Afghanistan.
Balochistan government’s spokesman Jan Buledi said the FC was also digging a similar trench along Pakistan’s border with Iran. “The ditch is being excavated about 20 kilometres inside Pakistani territory up to Washuk district,” he told The Express Tribune. “The ditch should have been dug right on the Pak-Iran border,” he said and voiced fears that Iran might capture the land beyond the ditch.
    Contractors’ issue
Durrani refused to disclose the names of the contractors hired by the federal government. However, a senior official said some prominent politicians were among the beneficiaries. “The contract has been given to the nephew of a top Pashtun nationalist leader from Balochistan,” he claimed.
The Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) has been opposed to recognising the Durand Line as an international border. It has been learnt that one contractor is a close relative of a prominent PkMAP leader, while another contractor also belongs to the party.
Due to these close ties, the federal government has also sanctioned a Sui gas supply project worth Rs1 billion for Gulistan Tehsil – the hometown of PkMAP chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai.
PkMAP central secretary general Akram Shah sought to dispel the impression that men from his party had been awarded the contract to supply manpower for the project. “I’ve heard that the Pakistan Army is digging a ditch along the border,” he said. “We maintained silence on the project because we believe it is a useless exercise. The Afghans are one nation which could not be divided with such ditches,” he added.
Former ambassador to Afghanistan Rustam Shah Mohmand said the project might have the blessings of the US. In November 2012, a senior US diplomat had said that the US recognised the Durand Line as an international border. “If the government in Kabul has other interpretation, that’s certainly their business ‘’ Richard E Hoagland, US deputy chief of mission in Pakistan, had said at a media roundtable.

These are the leaders opposing durandline but the inside story is different.
    Money talk.
Pashtuns of both side have no sympathy, respect and love for each others.
    They hate each others.
Pakistani army is bombing the villages of pashtuns AND SCHOOLS.ISI slaughtering us for ages now.
Not even a word of sympathy from the afghan govt for the suffering of pashtuns .
On the other side leaders of pkmap are helping punjabi army for ditch along pak-afghan border.
Masters of pashtuns (punjabis and tajiks) hate anything to do with pashtuns.
They hate our people, language and even history.
In afghanistan they are called paki agent and talebs while in pakistan they are called terrorists and sell out ghadars.
Punjabis are in win win situation. They killed us and make us hate eachothers.
Similarly tajiks pushing pashtuns towards pakistan.
I wonder where we stand here.

The professional liers/pashtun leaders finally digging ditch along pak-afghan borders for punjabis.
Well done the servant of punjab and money hungry pashtuns.

The Sikh bought your king and hired him.
The Britishes paid your king and divided your country.
    The Russains paid your leaders.
The Americans hired your leaders for dollars.
The Punjabis and US created another group Talebs.
So the Punjabis also hired you against your own country.
The Arabs, indians and China too have influence on your leaders.

Still you are singing the old songs.
Still you feel proud of khushal, emal, darya, abdali, mirwais and Bacha khan .
Pashtuns should not use the names of these great leaders of the past.
It will be an insult to these leaders.

Pashtuns should also stop calling names to other ethnicities cus we are no match for them.
Find me at least one punjabi who sold his country,s secrets to india for money?
Or worked for india against punjabistan.

On the other side i can give a long list of sell out pashtuns.

So stop this so called pride of nang and other useless stuff.
we are benang, sell out, money hungry and watan ferosh.
we are slaughtering our children for money .
who is haqani, fazlullah, faqir and khurasani etc
    are the not pashtuns?
are they not working for ,,isi,,?

we will suffer more and more cus we have lost all the qualities of good pashtuns.

Is the ditch the only thing they are working on or is it being dug in preparation for a fence?

Pashtun grandeur as people is one thing and geopolitics is another thing. Realism and idealism must be differentiated. Durand line is practically an international border as it is not disputed effectively by Afghanistan nationally or internationally.

Let us live in reality like Germans of Switzerland, Austria and Germany or Arabs of about 20 states. They are ethnically, linguistically, culturally, religiously and may be socially one but politically different. Let Pashtuns of Pakistan enjoy Pakistan and Pashtuns of Afghanistan their land. changing borders is idealism not realism.

Who you are to decide who is a tribal and who is not? Give a stop to the typical hegemonic mindset to tell other people what suits them and what doesn't. By the way Kurds are as tribals as Pashtuns are not to mention Arabs and score of other people in Africa. Or that is ok for obvious reasons?

Height of hypocrisy and self-serving notions of what is feasible and what is not feasible.

gadoonwal makes an important point. Pashtun nationalists are being marginalized on both sides of the DL.

That was a long time ago. Now its different, and the divide of Pashtuns is clearly based on the Durand line not tribes. Pashtuns are confused and divided by two countries who have different interest's and a way of living not to mention the being influenced by neighbouring ethnic groups. Pashtuns in afg are brainwashed into believing they are better living of with tajiks, and Pashtuns in pak are brainwashed to believe they are better living of with punjabis. Tons of countries were invaded and conquered who didn't have tribal structures like indians, pakis, eastern europeans and aborigines.

                      Your hypocrisy is showing hallo.

The article states that the Pashtun nationalist party is hardly fazed by this and don't take the ditch seriously. This indicates that Pakistan is bluffing on her part trying to scare ghani to take cautious measures.

I don't think we as Pashtuns should take this seriously either....for now.
