PESHAWAR: Police on Wednesday arrested activists of Awami Workers Party (AWP), workers civil society organisations and members of the Action Committee who were protesting against the attack on the Army Public School, Peshawar, on December 16 that killed at least 150 people, including 134 children.
All arrested persons, including a female, were set free in the evening, peace activist and renowned social mobiliser Dr Syed Alam Mehsud told Daily Times expressing anger at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government resorting to this action, which, he described as “totally unwarranted.” “We were peacefully protesting and all of a sudden police were ordered to take action against us,” he said, adding that some 60 protesters, including female activist Sana Ijaz, were arrested. “The police tackled all us very roughly,” he said. Dr Syed Alam said that the call for complete wheel jam and shutter down was “successful” and the protest was peaceful as no damage was caused to the public property. Among the arrested persons included Awami Workers Party Provincial President Shahab Khattak and 11 other party activists.
Another party activist, Nisar Shah, said that 12 party activists were arrested by the provincial police department, adding that the provincial party president and two other party activists were still detained. Dr Syed Alam said that the call was given to strengthen voices against terrorism and increasing extremism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and express solidarity with bereaved families, reinforcing the public demand from the government that no December 16-like incident should repeat anywhere in the country.
