Pakistan plans to execute 500 militants following deadly school attack

Pakistan to execute 500 militantsShortly after lifting a moratorium on the death penalty in terrorism cases, the government of Pakistan plans to execute around 500 militants arrested by the country’s security forces.
According to senior Pakistani officials, the government is planning to execute the convicts in coming weeks.
At least six militants have been executed since the deadly attack on an army-run school in Peshawar city of Pakistan a week ago which left over 140 people dead, mostly school children.
The attack by the Pakistani militants sparked outrage on domestic and international level, forcing the Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to life the six-year moratorium.
“[The] interior ministry has finalised the cases of 500 convicts who have exhausted all the appeals,” a senior Pakistani official told AFP.
The official further added “Their mercy petitions have been turned down by the president and their executions will take place in coming weeks.”
In the meantime, the Human Rights Watch has condemned the decision by the government of Pakistan to reinstate executions, terming the executions “a craven politicised reaction to the Peshawar killings”.
The rights group on Saturday demanded that no further hangings be carried out.
