  • "I will never go back to Afghanistan": Faizullah Khan from Mansehra

KARACHI: “I will never go back to Afghanistan,” was the verdict given by Faizullah Khan, the Pakistani journalist, who was recently released from detention in Afghanistan. “The first trip was enough of an experience for me,” he said resolutely.
Clad in a new black kameez shalwar, the reporter however did admit his mistake. His gaze lowered towards the floor, he fervently nodded his head. “Yes, it was my fault. I was travelling without documents and passport,” he paused, before carrying on. “But I had no idea I would be travelling to Afghanistan.”

Back in Pakistan, and sitting comfortably at Karachi Press Club (KPC), Khan has vowed never to go back. A reporter for ARY News, Khan covers the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and courts and has been in the profession for the last eight years.
In April, he was detained by Afghan authorities and later sentenced by the Jalalabad court for four years for illegally travelling to the neighboring country. On September 28, however, the Afghan court miraculously gave orders for his release.
    The TTP assignment
The television journalist said that he was travelling with officials of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan for an interview. “Those days, negotiations were going on between the government and the TTP. I wanted to interview the TTP leadership on the issue.”
Khan had assumed that he would be meeting them in the tribal areas of Pakistan, and was surprised when the TTP took him to Afghanistan for the interview.
“I had no idea that we were going to Afghanistan because the location was undisclosed. I had no passport with me.”
The first interview took place in TTP’s media cell in Nangarhar, Afghanistan. Done with the interview, Khan was on the way to interview other TTP officials when he was detained at Lalpura Check post by Afghan intelligence officials.
“With no travel documents, they thought I was a spy.” And when they saw the interview tapes, Khan said that the intelligence officials were even more perturbed.
“Since the interview had taken place in Afghanistan, the officials said that it was not good for their country’s image as everyone presumes that the TTP is present in Pakistan but at that time, they were present in Afghanistan and I interviewed them there.”
However, the intelligence’s accusation of Khan being a spy was not proved, and the Jalalabad court sentenced him to four years in jail for travelling to Afghanistan illegally.
His laptop, clothes, and interview tapes were confiscated, never to be returned. “There was nothing sensitive in the tapes. But they still kept it.”
    Detention
Khan, who was sentenced in July, said that his time in the Nangarhar Jail, housing 2,000 prisoners, was the most difficult. “There were 17 to 18 prisoners staying with me. The officials did not torture me but they said negative things about Pakistan.”
In jail, the prisoners received ‘very bad food’, mostly vegetables. “We used to make our own food but when the Americans and UN officials came for inspection, they would hide our stoves.”
For two months, he slept on the floor and later got a bed when there were fewer prisoners. Khan, who hails from Manshera, says that there were several Pakistanis in the jails, labourers who were travelling without documents and others with ties with the Taliban.
Khan, who once had curly long locks, said that he was most upset when the jail officials shaved his head. “When I came back, my son did not recognise me.”
    Home at last
Last Sunday, the journalist and father of four, said he was shocked when he was told he would be released.
“It was Karzai’s last day when I was released. I heard the prosecutor saying that Karzai had ordered my release.”
Khan has a long list of people to thank: journalist bodies, the Pakistani government, the Afghanistan government and even Malala Yousafzai, who rallied for his return home.
“I had lost all hope of being released anytime soon. The intelligence officials had said that I would never be able to see the sun again.”
The journalist, who claims he is mentally exhausted, wants to take a break before getting back to reporting. “I will rest and travel somewhere with my family for some time before coming back on the job again,” he smiled.
"I bow to no one, except ALLAH. I dont bow to punjabay, do not bow to kabulay and afghanay, do not bow to faujay and mullay, do not bow to asfandyarwalay and petty khanays...i am traitor to all of them." - Smartay

Interesting case. A Pakistani Pashtun journalist gets this kind of treatment in Afghanistan. It means travel documents are required to cross the border between Lar and Bar Pashtuns.

I wish this journalist write more about his experiences in Afghanistan.

I heard some stories like this from other pashtuns.
The afghans are walking free in pashtunkhwa while pashtun from the east face this kind of situation.
This is shame that pashtuns treated like this in their mother country.
pashtuns from the east are more open to the afghan-pashtuns.
we need better understanding.we should not play the blame game of parsibans calling every pashtun spy.
yes there are pashtuns spying for pakistan but not all.
There are afghan-pashtun spying for pakistan so what should we do to them?

All of the above tripledouble post this to make pashtuns against eachothers.
We can not blame all afghans for the work of few bad apples.

This whole story is fabricated by Punjabies to blame Afghanistan in harboring TTP memebers and blame them for terrorism, don't belive in this ****.

And by the way most Afghans that go to Pakistan also get visas and documents with them, without it they are treaded worser than street dogs, its not just Afghans that act like this towards Paki Pashtuns.
Pakis are no better and no Afghan can walk free in Pakistan they are harrasd and discriminated almost every time.

Nazia Iqbal faced similar problems recently despite of she being a very well known pashto singer in both Pakistan and Afghanistan

Majority doesn't had documents even until 2009-10.it would also be safe to assume that 90% of my Afghan friends are now having Pakistan citizen despite the fact that not even there parents had any documents related to being refugee in 2009-10,atleast those i know living in Bannu and dik

Discrimination had started very recently, perhaps onwards 2011 but it is limited to only the security officials.

I think Pakistan should have never given nationalities to Afghans because no one asked Pakistan to give nationalities to Afghans. It was but the interest of Pakistan and corrupt system which gave nationalities to Afghans.
I believe in no-interference in others' matters and don't allow others to interfere in your matters. This should be the policy of Pakistan and every other country.

Its typical for an afghan to be in pakistan. Their reason for being there is known. A Pakistani man dressed like that and without any documents to prove his identity in a country full of foreign suicidal bombing terrorists is an entirely different matter.
He is an educated man with no excuse for travelling without papers..

Yes but law enforcement in Pakistan doesn't treat Afghan migrants like this, many of them live in ethnic enclaves, own illegal weapons, sell drugs, rob, steal in Karachi,Quetta and Rawalpindi, I have been told by people from Muzzafarabad that they're bribing Patwaris to buy land which is against the laws over there, yet Pakistan doesn't treat them that bad

Some these refugees also work as hitman for the militant wings of parties like ANP(most Pakistani parties have militant wings)

That is not to say that all Afghans do this, there are good law abiding Afghans that work hard.

It's not the government, it's corrupt officials at NADRA who give them NICs and passports for $$$, the police are also corrupt.

It was not in Pakistan's interests, the ANP and PkMAP used their sources to issue them citizenship because it increased their vote bank such as in Karachi and Balochistan; they're now moving to Azad Kashmir and will takeover there soon.

My Afghan friend told me that he only bribes border guards Rs20 to cross the Durrand line, hopefully the trenches will now discourage that.

Actually, they do. In the past afghan refugees in Pakistan did not have documents, in 2014, I know for a fact that they do. Which is good because it makes things easier for both governments.
Now back to this guy. This guy was not an immigrant or a refugee. It's not that these documents were not accessible to him, he chose not to carry them with himself.
Pakistani refugees have been welcomed in Afghanistan when they came in and announced themselves as being who they were and not just sneaked in and then claim to be Pakistanies without documents when captured. As a matter of fact, I know a lot of Pakistanies who are not only working at high positions in government posts but also come in for other jobs and labor. Our own family tailor in Kabul is a guy who speaks broken Dari and pure Urdu. He doesn't speak pashto so he is not even there with the assurance of being granted some sympathy for being from the other side of the Durand line. He is never harassed by anyone. Afghans on the other hand were and are being harassed and abused in Pakistan. And I am not saying that none of these refugees in Pakistan are criminals but if they wanted for that problem to stop or not exist, the Pakistani government could have stopped them or documented these people many many years ago, which they didn't since that wasn't their priority. That's understanding and now that they have an issue at hand, it's fair to say, it's the consequence of their own carelessness. Afghanistan is taking action to prevent this mess from taking place in years to come and that is a positive thing for which they need to be encouraged and applauded.
Just because Pakistan did a horrible job at handling a situation doesn't mean everyone else has to do the same.

Lol, who is NADRA, Nadra is a govt institution. what is border guard, border guards are also from govt. govt is not some nawaz sharif or some zardari.
all the identity documents are issued from the govt side. You should blame only and only govt and no one else.

There are very few Pakistanis in Afghanistan, if there are any it's a strange exception.

This man wasn't just arrested cause he didn't have documents.

He was interviewing the Taliban faction in Pakistan's tribal areas, they took him across the border blindfolded for the interview in their sanctuary somewhere in northeast Afghanistan, when he came out after the interview he was arrested; the Afghan intelligence detained him and destroyed the tapes of his interviews with the Taliban, they were afraid that these tapes would expose the fact that the Taliban has sanctuaries in Afghanistan which would be a humiliation and also change the PR war against their interests.

Afghan intel framed this man as an ISI agent but they had no evidence, finally after a long time languishing in jail, Karzai released him on his last day in office.

                          So
1.He didn't knowingly cross over the border.
2.He was arrested for what he was doing as a journalist
3.Lack of Documents made no difference, it was just a pretext to legitimize his arrest.

So he mingled with Taliban with the confidence that he will be safe in their company but he is hind sore for being interrogated by the afghan government?? I was under the impression that he had some involvements but I wasn't sure so I did not mention it but thanks for bringing it up.
Afghan government has even more reason to be suspicious of him (since Pakistan is known for brazenly announcing and suggesting that the jahad of Taliban in Afghanistan is legitimate) and make sure he has not been blindfoldedly trained to blow himself up to smithereens.
This is not some random Pakistani in afghanistan, this is a Pakistani playing with fire and wanting to have nothing to do with the consequences of his actions. You don't see that. I don't know if that is because you are incapable of reaching that conclusion or are in denial of it.. Whichever the case, any further involvement on my part in this thread will result in a lot of frustrations for me which will develop in to anger shortly after so I am going to excuse myself from this conversation.
