MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): A transmission booster of Afghanistan’s leading Pashto-language television channel has been torched in northern Balkh province, suspending its transmissions in at least five provinces, a reporter said on Wednesday.
Abdul Mateen Sahak told Pajhwok Afghan News that although no one had claimed responsibility for the attack, he suspected the booster had been torched purposefully.
Provincial security officials confirmed the incident. Col. Abdul Razzaq Qadri, ruling out the possibility of a criminal offense, said the evident cause was an electric short circuit.
Shamshad officials alleged that all of their broadcasting apparatus, including FM radio transmitters, had been deliberately set on fire.
The Afghanistan Independent Journalist’s Association (AIJA), meanwhile, called for a thorough investigation into the matter. AIJA said it was the responsibility of the Balk government to probe the incident.
