Cross-border incursions: All options on the table, if Kabul doesn’t act, says officials

    ISLAMABAD:
Pakistan has conveyed to Afghanistan that it may explore other options including the use of force to stop cross-border attacks if Kabul does not take immediate steps against terrorists.
“All options, including military, are on the table… but our priority at this stage is to resolve the issue through diplomatic channels,” cautioned a senior security official, shortly after an attack on Friday afternoon at a check-post in Bajaur Agency, bordering the Afghan province of Kunar, left an FC man Abdul Qayum Bangash dead.

The senior official strongly criticised Afghan authorities for what he called ‘lack of action’ to rein in ‘terrorist sanctuaries’ on their soil. The official, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Express Tribune that Pakistan had several times urged Afghanistan to destroy terrorist hideouts on its soil in order to ensure that operation ‘Zarb-e-Azb’ is successful. “Contrary to that we have now reports that Afghan authorities are facilitating terrorists to launch attacks on our side,” he added.
Although, the official would not go into details about the military option, sources said Pakistan had warned Afghanistan that it might resort to ‘hot pursuit’ to destroy Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) hideouts in Kunar and Nuristan provinces if Kabul failed to take appropriate steps against them.

However, a senior foreign office official insisted that Pakistan would try to resolve the issue at diplomatic levels.

On Friday, Pakistan launched a strong protest with Afghanistan for the second time in three days over the latest cross border attack in Bajaur. Security officials said that at around 3 pm on Friday afternoon, militants from Kunar province fired at the Ghakhai check-post and fled. Earlier, on July 30, 70 to 80 militants attacked a check-post in lower Dir, where military officials said seven militants were killed and nine injured in retaliatory fire.

“A strong protest has been lodged with the charge d’affaires of Afghanistan over another cross-border attack by terrorists on Friday. A Pakistani soldier embraced Shahadat due to sniper fire from the Afghan side of the border at a Pakistani military post near Ghakhai Pass in Bajaur Agency,” said a statement issued by the foreign ministry.

It was stressed to the charge d’affaires that the Afghan authorities must take concrete action to stop such incidents and prevent the recurrence of cross-border fire and physical attacks by terrorists operating from Afghan territory, the statement added.
Sources said the government had also decided to take up the matter at the highest level in order to avoid further escalation in tensions.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is likely to telephone President Hamid Karzai and convey Pakistan’s concern over the increase in cross-border attacks.

In June, the prime minister sent Chief of the Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party Mahmood Khan Achakzai to Kabul after reports that terrorists from across the border were planning massive attacks on Pakistani posts.
Pakistan has sought Afghanistan’s cooperation ever since it launched a military offensive in North Waziristan Agency. Both the civil and military leadership have publicly stated that the ongoing operation is targeting all groups including the Haqqani Network.
However, Afghan authorities are skeptical of Pakistan’s claim and insisted that Operation Zarb-e-Azb has not targeted the Haqqani Network, which has launched some daring attacks in Afghanistan.

Some Pakistani officials feel the ongoing attacks from across the border might be linked with the current political impasse in Afghanistan. They suspect that President Karzai appears to cling to power by encouraging cross-border attacks that may jeopardise the transfer of power in Kabul.

I want to see these so called "reports" these pakis keep bragging about that Afghans are sending terrorists into their territory, when it is them that deliberately plant TTP groups and camps in the east and put the blame on us. Oh the irony, the pot calling the kettle black to further the blame game!

This is all nothing but manufactured drama and typical two-faced paki double speak. Nobody takes these dal khors seriously. They know exactly what will happen to them if they cross the border, so they will continue to hide behind empty statements and terrorists instead as they have done for more than 20 years.

One thing all pashtuns and afghans must understand that pakis hate afghanistan.
They do not want this country to move towards peace and stability.
Soon afghanistan will be under the rule of well educated pashtun.
These pakis will run to their holes like rats.
They failed and will fail again.

USA rape them all the time it is, they don't dare to speak. But a weak Afghanistan/Pashtunistan of today, they can threat with out evidence. This is what I am telling you Pashtuns on PF. We must finish Ahmad Shah Abdali's work in Punjab for good. Let their mix raced supporters like bannu kuni feel the wrath of Pashtuns.

When will paki pashtuns put pressure on their governament/army to stay in limits and refrain from such statements?. Last time i checked kabul did warn of "reteliation" even though we know that they are not capable of it.
In my opinion afghanistan should make contacts with TTP and support them in killing khanzeers of army and FC stationed at border, pakis should be taught a lesson in their own langauge

Dear you are discussing incidents and I am talking about the permanent solution. please make Afghanistan so strong that no one could interfere in Afghanistan's personal matter and no one dare to bomb it. Try to understand this point otherwise we will be crying for ever and they will be laughing and playing with us.

You are expressing "wish" that if afghanistan was that powerful, this is not 'solution'. How can you expect afghanistan to be strong and powerful when its incomplete, two third pashtuns are in paleedistan. The ones laughing at us are dhalkhors at GHQ and the one gaurding their gates are pathans and ones doing their dirty work in afghanistan are pathans of ISI. I am confused about "us". There are 40 million pashtuns in paleedistan, if they were united and kept strong attachment to afghanistan, punjabi degenerates would not have dared to ruin FATA and PATA, let alone making incursions into afghanistan. Punjabis are neo-ranjeet singh forces but this time their guides, fodder and foot soldiers are paki pathans. Too many sell outs, too much modified identity-wise
Dont be so harsh on afghanistan, they have seen 4 decades long war and are still at war. Guzara kawa kiliwala

you admit and understand that pashtuns of pakhtunkhwa are not united, then expecting something from them is just shallow wish.
We are in minority in Pakistan, Pashtuns of Afghanistan are in majority and they have their own country and power. They should make their country stronger, the system stronger, the army proffessional and then give us an example otherwise Afghanistan will remain the same for the next 200 years, Allah de na krri. kho za khali daa wayam, razai che faryadona pregdo aw khpal zaal takrra kro, aw yo kro aw wikh sho aw zaan kha pokh kro. pa de ke zamong da tolo ghwara da.

It will depend on the will of the Pakistani Pashtuns (and possibly Baluch): we know that civil war in Afghanistan is a certainty in the coming decade but the question is, will it also spill into Pakistan, a la Iraq/Syria, with a Pashtun (and possibly Baluch) uprising against the Pakistani state? However, the Pakistani state is not incompetent Maliki my friend; the price for Bangladesh's independence was a death toll of between 300,000-3,000,000 (the death toll in Syria is just over 100,000 as of now), I don't think it will be anywhere near as easy as easy as fighting against Maliki or even Assad so be careful what you wish for.

Its like expecting that wrekage and runis of north waziristan after zarb-e-azab to flex their muscles and set example for other areas.
Admit it, pakistani pakhtuns are so numerous and politically aware that if they stage massive protests from swat to quetta against shelling on afghanistan or incursions, napak army will come under heavy pressure. All of them are either afraid, brainwashed or sold out. They cant even protest against human right abuses of paki army in their own areas. Instead of blaming afghanistan, lets first look at ourselves.
When i look at balochs, they are truely fearless and free-spirited, they have taken up arms as well as they are raising their voices peacefully. More swatians and tribals have disappeared than balochs at the hands of agencies but we couldnt produce mama qadeer. We saw what happened to those afridis who were protesting infront of governor house about extrajudial killings, bullets were sprayed at them when they were sleeping, by FC who are none other than pashtuns . And the ones kicking the butts of afridi protestors were pashtun policemen. They acted on orders of punjabi army, even though police is under provincial governament.
@jan khan do you support territorial integrity of pakistan? , it seems you are only against napak army

Punjabis will also die in massive numbers, if by any chance pashtuns choose the path of bengalis and punjabi army decide to give them treatment of east pakistan treatment. Pakhtunkhwa is not 2000 km away province from punjab. Pakhtunkhwa shares long border with punjab, every part of punjab is within our reach. Without army, they are totally helpless, the general civilian dhalkhors of punjab are pus-suies, they will be butchered if their army attempted to commit open genocides and rapes like 71.
But it is only possible if pashtuns stays united and ghairatmand. And armed nationalistic rebellion like bengalis and balochs cant be expected from pashtuns. Its not gonna happen, the story wont proceed beyond taliban vs army. And majority of pashtuns in paki hate taliban.
