At least 8 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 3 wounded on Friday as militants mounted an assault on a Frontier Corps check-post in the restive tribal Khyber Agency.
Officials said two vehicles were also destroyed in the attack that took place in Ghundi area of the Khyber Agency.
“Four militants were also killed when the force returned fire while 3 were arrested”, said a security official.
Meanwhile on Friday, a militant allegedly involved in the Kamra airbase attack was shot dead in a joint operation carried out by the police and Rangers in Machar Colony of Karachi.
“Two members of gang war were also killed in another operation in Dakas area”, said a police official.
Bilal Khan, the alleged mastermind of the attack on Kamra airbase, was killed in an overnight operation conducted by joint forces of police and Rangers.
The operation was carried out on a tip-off regarding the presence of criminal elements in Macchar Colony, said the police official.
The law enforcement agencies and the militant also exchanged heavy gunfire during the operation.
According to a Rangers spokesperson, Bilal Khan was an operative of Al Qaeda and banned Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Bilal Khan, who was adept at training suicide bombers, was involved in the attack on Kamra base. Heavy cache of weapons and hand grenades were recovered from his possession.
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) base in Islamabad was furiously attacked by heavily-armed militants dressed in uniforms on August 16, 2012 early morning. According to the officials, nine people got killed in the clash at PAF base Minhas.
Separately, officials said, the security agencies have requested the interior ministry to immediately take steps for the implementation of death sentences awarded to dangerous terrorists.
Prisoners on death row include top terrorists and criminals including Niaz Ahmed, Fazal Hameed, Malik Noor Badshah, Ahmad Umer Saeed Sheikh, Aqeel alias Dr Usman and others.
In a letter to the interior ministry, the security institutions have stated that if the sentences were not implemented, these terrorists could become security risk in the future.
The communiqué recommended executing death sentences without considering the reaction from their organisations as these top terrorists could also plan terrorist attacks while in jail.
Presently more than 300 terrorists are awaiting implementation of death sentences in various jails and there was “every possibility” that terrorists may attack these jails to get them free as it had been witnessed in Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan jails in the past.
