  • Afghanistan's Economic Outlook Post 2014,

According to Afghan economic analysts, Afghanistan will suffer a recession post 2014 and beyond after foreign troops leave and aid dwindles, and if the security situation gets worse, the country could face complete economic collapse. Increasing security will allow the Afghan government to build infrastructure, the economy and social support. The lack of infrastructure has had a significant negative impact on Afghanistan’s economic development. Since 2001, USAID in conjunction with the Afghan Government has rehabilitated nearly 2,500 km of regional and national roads increasing access to marketplaces and international trade; eighty percent of Afghans now live within 50 km of the country-wide Ring Road, giving Afghans better access to their country's major transportation routes, and facilitating their access to markets, schools, health clinics and government services.
The NATO foreign ministers have confirmed their commitment to provide funding to sustain the Afghan security forces. NATO Secretary General Anderson Fogh Rasmussen said, “Our goal is to launch a new mission to train, advice and assist the Afghan security forces from the start of next year. Today, we endorsed the detailed operational plan for that new mission, called Resolute Support. But it is the Afghans who must take the next step. The necessary security agreements must be signed soon. Otherwise, we will not be able to keep any troops in Afghanistan past 2014.”
How do you evaluate Afghanistan’s economic outlook post 2014?
