  • Afghan election commission declares Ghani winner in preliminary results

    I deserve alot of likes

KABUL: Former World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani won Afghanistan’s presidential election, according to preliminary results released on Monday, with 56.4% of the run-off vote to Abdullah Abdullah’s 43.5%.

Officials said the turnout was more than eight million in the June 14 vote out of an estimated electorate of 13.5 million voters – far higher than expected, and a figure likely to trigger further allegations of fraud from both sides.

“The IEC (Independent Election Commission) admits that despite best efforts for a better election, there were some technical mistakes and shortcomings in the process,” IEC head Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani told reporters.

“We can not deny fraud and violations in the process, in some cases some security forces were involved, in other cases senior government officials like the governors or lower-level officials were involved.”

Last-minute talks delayed the release of the results by nearly five hours on Monday, as the two campaigns tried to thrash out a deal over fraud allegations that threaten to fuel instability.

Abdullah has vowed to reject the preliminary result, alleging he was the victim of “industrial-scale” ballot-box stuffing, while Ghani has said he won fairly.
Central to the talks is how many of the total 23,000 polling stations will now be put through an anti-fraud audit.

“We agreed for an audit of 7,000 polling stations, but they had other conditions that we couldn’t agree with, so for now there is only partial agreement,” Ghani’s spokesperson Daud Sultanzoy told AFP before the result.
Abdullah’s spokesperson Fazel Sancharaki said: “Our main demand was for the inspection of 11,000 polling stations under the close supervision of the United Nations (UN). Seven thousand polling stations is not enough.

“The negotiations are still ongoing. If they produce a result, we will enter the process, otherwise… we will not recognise it.”

Both sides said the UN was involved in the talks, but its spokesperson declined to give further details.

Afghanistan’s international backers have lobbied hard to try to ensure a smooth election process, but the contested outcome could realise their worst fears and raises the risk of civil unrest.

Following the preliminary result on Monday, the official result is scheduled for July 24 after a period for the audit and adjudication of complaints.

Ghani ahead of Abdullah in preliminary results

KABUL (Pajhwok) The Independent Election Commission (IEC) finally announced the preliminary results of the presidential ballot on Monday, with Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai taking a million vote lead over his rival.
Addressing a well-attended news conference in Kabul, IEC Chairman Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani unveiled the long-awaited outcome after a five days delay. He said 8.109493 million ballots had been found valid.

The initial results showed the turnout in the second round of the election had been around 60 percent -- 38 percent of them women. Under the constitution, a candidate securing more ballots in the runoff election is declared a winner.

None of the runners could secure more than 50 percent of votes in the first round on April 5. Ahmadzai secured a total of 4485888 votes or 56.4 percent while Dr. Abdullah got 3461639 ballots -- or 43.6 percent -- in the second round.

Originally, the preliminary results were to be announced on July 2, but the announcement was delayed due to a reassessment of ballots papers from 1,930 polling stations.

Nuristani confirmed vote rigging and promised a more extensive investigation before final results were released. "We cannot ignore the technical problems and fraud during the election process. Some governors and government officials were involved in fraud."
Abdullah said that was insufficient and demanded the results be postponed until all fraud allegations were resolved.

The impasse has threatened to undermine what the U.S. and its allies had hoped would be the country's first democratic transfer of authority after President Hamid Karzai agreed to step down after two terms as legally required.
In line with the election law, after the announcement, the IEC sends the preliminary results to the complaints panel, which will take 10 days to complete the process of probing objections.

With the complaints addressed, the IEC is expected to unveil the final result on July 14. If the watchdog does not drastically alter the results, Ahmadzai will be sworn in as next president on the 5th day of Eidul Fitr.
Alleging industrial-scale fraud, Abdullah repeatedly said he would not accept the results. But the UN, the US and other major actors lobbied a lot to ensure the integrity of the election process.

Before the unconfirmed results were announced, representatives of the ex-World Bank economist and the former foreign minister held last-minute talks in an effort to break the deadlock over the outcome.

HE hasn't won yet, most articles are showing that he is just ahead by a large margin.

Chief election commissioner says more than 56 percent of tally went to former finance minister, while rival Abdullah Abdullah received approximately 44 percent

Winner of the vote cannot be declared until election organisers finish checks following allegations of voting fraud

According to some Pashtuns, going back to the monarchy system is a good idea in a country like Afghanistan where tribalism thrives and works about 90% of the time. The Brits still practise it with a regular political government to the side who deal with international affairs (ex. prime minister) one family or tribe is selected by pashtun leaders in a jirga and everyone lives happily ever after.

1.If you take a stock of all types of rulers/governance in terms of patriotism, loyalty to the nation, caring for the people, sincere efforts at development, righteousness and honesty throughout history then monarchy and monarchs emerge the best.

                          2. The Arab Sheikh and monarchs are a bad example. But are they doing worse than the others? Again, the old monarchies like the Hashemites of Jordan and Idriside-Alawaites of Morocco are not doing bad.
