I spoke to a Pakistani from Karachi a few years back and he told me in Karachi no one calls themselves "Pakistanis". It is a heavily polarized city. Everyone calls themselves a "Balochi" or "Mohajir" or "Pashtun" etc.
They often live in their own neighbourhoods, marry from each other etc.
I think Afghanistan has far more inter-marriage than Pakistan and from my experience of Afghans in real life they are committed to a united Afghanistan and the ethnic divisions, though existent, are not as great as in Pakistan.
Islam plays less part cause everyone is Muslim (aside from Shia sectarian violence)
These divisions are usually about economics and about upper class, middle class and lower class business..
Pashtuns in Karachi are usually Afghan refugees or come from the poor regions of FATA. Balochis are poor too and come from the arid lands of Balochistan... same with Sindhis since sindh is a hot land...
The Mohajirs, and Punjabis call themselves Pakistanis cause they enjoy a higher social status and mix with eachother cause they are of the same social class, and it's also the case of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Pashtuns who are generally more well off than FATA and Afghan Pashtuns and are proud Pakistanis, but the poorer people can clearly see the city as multi-ethnic or multi-nationali and stuff and are alienated in the pan-pakistani identity.....
Well because pashtuns want their own state or they want to be reunited with their families on the other side of the invalid border. Too bad the 1947 referendum said pakistan or india only lol.. India is much worse..

1.What is the percentage of Pashtuns that have divided families from atleast their second cousins?
2.Percentage of Pashtuns that cross the durrand line on a casual basis as if the border weren't there, to trade, meet people or work on both sides?
3. What Pashtun tribes are divided? Did the Durrand line cut tribes apart or did it divide Pashtuns evenly down the tribes????

When I say families, I don't even mean that literally. I really mean their own people they have been split up with. Who knows the percentage? All I know is that before that for many decades after 1947 the border was a joke to cross.. war and foreign armies changed that and it is not significantly harder to casually cross the border safely. And are you kidding me? Tribes have been split for sure.. In fact my best friend is a Yousafzai who said his grt grandpa and his great grandpa's brother lived less than 5 minutes away from each other but ended up in different countries. My own family (Afghan mother, Pakistani Father) would also find it much easier if that border wasn't there.

Thank you for your informative posts. You know far more than I do. I just want to add this.
1. Mohajirs are divided amongst themselves and even amongst themselves there is a hierarchy e.g. Delhiwalas consider themselves better than people like Biharis.
2. Hyderabad is a city where there is a real Mohajir v Sindhi tension due to the violence and deaths there in the past.
3. Karachi police and rangers are Punjabis basically, yes? (This is what I heard). They are viewed as an extension of the "imperial" (federal) Punjabi control of Pakistan.
4. There is a constant never ending amount of immigration to Karachi as people are looking for jobs. The city's population is just increasing. Karachi is a potential timebomb waiting to explode.
5. Karachi can never become a Mohajir-dominated city. There are too many Pashtuns (a people with a martial culture) as well as Balochis and others e.g. the Balochis control Lyari. The dream of Mohajir hegemony is now just that a dream which will never happen.
I accidently stumbled on an Afghani site then entered the chat room thinking it would be interesting to talk with some of our "brothers" from across the border. When they realised that i was of Pakistani origin all kinds of abuse was thrown my way together with insults to Pakistani cities, people and culture. Can anyone tell me why the Afghani's are so bitter towards us or are they just completely uncivilised people who no nothing but war and hatred??.Is Pakistan to blame for there suffering since they were invaded??.If they hate us so much then they should get out of Pak and return to the country of landmines.I'd be interested to hear experiences of other people.
These pictures are of Pashtuns in Kunar protesting Pakistani rocket fire into Kunar province.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.
You know what are Different in bangladesh people and Pakistani people ?
the different is that when we Support some one in your Country ,
you Called them Terrorists
and when we hate Some one in own our country this is your Ideal
like your profile picture Traitor Hamid Mir Khanzeer , The India Agent
I am going to place this Pakistani nationalist on ignore but before I do for the sake of others I am just going to refute some of his Pakistani nationalist nonsense.
1. This troll a day or two went on to my wall to tell me to remove my avatar of Hamid Mir. I deleted this as unsolicited spam from a Pakistani nationalist.
2. This right-wing Pakistani fascist has a picture of Qader Mollah on his avatar, I have an avatar of Hamid Mir. Here are the differences between the two.
Mollah was a convicted mass murderer.
Hamid Mir has never killed anyone but protested against murder.
Mollah was a member of a political party which organized rapes and sex camps.
Hamid Mir has never raped anyone or organized sex camps.
3. The Pakistani regime has never recognized Bangladesh as a truly sovereign country and views it as an ex-province that must spiritually and emotionally be "loyal" to Pakistan and have a degree of "Pakistaniyaat" in its thinking.
This is why the Pakistani regime protested at Bangladesh executing a Bangladeshi citizen for murdering Bangladeshi civilians on Bangladeshi soil (i.e. Qader Molla).
Bangladesh does not even really care that much about Pakistan besides the apology that we are due e.g. we do not host Balochi, Sindhi dissidents or provide any moral support to Baloch rebels. Whereas Pakistan sponsors the Jamaat e Islami terrorist organization and was involved in an attempt to plan a coup in Bangladesh 2 years ago.
4. Radical Pakistani nationalists and "Pathans" like Mayan oppose Hamid Mir because he is opposed to the Pakistani army who murder and torture Balochis. Hamid Mir's father was a journalist who spoke out against the Pakistani military's genocide in Bangladesh in 1971, so it is not surprising that a radical Pakistani nationalist who calls Hamid Mir a "khanzeer" (a pig) burns with hatred for Hamid Mir.
By the way the funniest thing is that Mayan has the national flag of Bangladesh in his avatar, the same flag of the country that the Jamaatis he supports struggled to stop from being created.
Welcome to ignore, Pakistani nationalist "Pathan", Mayan.
I dont hate pakistanis. Actually I like them. I feel closer to a pakistani than to my own persianspeaker iranian brothers. But I am against pakistani policy toward my country and how they are always spreading ethnic hatred in afghanistan and creating gaps between us.
Pakistan helps afghanistan in Soviet war in 1979
The different mujahideen factions could not agree on how to share power, and the country quickly descended into a bloody civil war. In 1994, a movement of Pashtun fundamentalist students most of whom were trained in madrasas (religious schools) in the refugee camps in Pakistan seized Kandahar and started a campaign to wrest the country from the hands of the warlords. Known as the Taliban, this force marched into Kabul in 1996 and took control of most of the rest of the country by 1998. Many mujahideen warlords were forced to flee to the north, where they joined the United Islamic Front for the Salvation of Afghanistan
BS.
When Najibullah´s regime collapsed Pakistan started a dirty game in our country by backing several pashtun militias (first that dog called Hekmatyar and after him taliban). Indeed Pakistan helped a lot a lot Afghanistan during soviet war but it because soviet aim was to reach warm waters in Baluchistan. Pakistanis knew that if URSS take over Afghanistan Pakistan would be next.
Man I remember in school all these paki kids used to say "chitta kuta" (white dog) because they thought I didn't know urdu. What people fail to realize is that as a pashtun, I will always be afghan.. I may have a Canadian and Pakistani nationality but I am afghan till the death of me. I've never had a problem with pakis and I respect many of them, especially kashmiris and baloch but it's mainly the urdu speaking pricks from karachi that ever said anything rude to me.. Even some of them are fine but we don't 'hate' pakistanis, we hate the country's policies..

Why would they call you a white dog in Punjabi, If you didn't know Urdu?
Pakis (especially punjabis) are hella annoying. When most of the ones i've talked to find out i am afghan, they claim that their grandfather or someone was a Pathan originally from Kabul, while other say that their brother or sister is married to a pashtun from Peshawar lol.
