    The decline of Pashto

    By Mureeb Mohmand

    Published: April 27, 2014

Pakistan is a multilingual state, where one of the first controversies after independence arose on the question of language. There were considerable pressures from some circles that Urdu be declared as the official language of the state, which was vehemently opposed by Muslims in East Pakistan who demanded that the Bangla language be given the same status. Unfortunately, their voices were silenced by force, which lead to a bloody episode in history that all of us are all too familiar with.

It is indeed a fact that Urdu, which is the official language of the state, is not the language of any of the nationalities that dwell within the state. Simply because of the state’s patronage, Urdu is now the most widely-spoken language in Pakistan. But the preponderance of one language over all others eats upon the sphere of influence of other, smaller languages, which alienates the respective nationalities and fuels aversion towards the central leadership.
Not only is the state or the state’s policy responsible for the downfall of these languages, but the politicians who always use it as a propaganda tool are not sincere about preserving these languages either.

‘Pakhto’, or Pashto, as it is popularly called, is one of the most-widely spoken languages of Pakistan (spoken in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Karachi) and Afghanistan. Owing to widespread ignorance towards the preservation of this language on either side of the Durand Line, Pashto enjoys neither state patronage nor political weightage anywhere.
To date, no state or politically-sponsored literary programmes have been organised in any part of Pakistan and Afghanistan. If any programmes or seminars were ever held, they were, in their entirety, organised by NGOs or private literary organisations.
This does much to show our interest in the language and its promotion. Not only this, anniversaries of Hamza Baba, the well-known Pashto poet (like the Iqbal or Faiz of Urdu) and Ghani Khan are also regularly ignored by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government and other nationalist parties.
If we look to our state policies regarding the promotion of Pashto and the interests of the Pakhtun political elite, it is clear that the future of the Pashto language is dark. And when the future of a language is dark, the future of the people is dark.

Published in The Express Tribune, April 27th, 2014.

An example of an individual Pashtun involved in ensuring the survival of the Pashto language in contrast to any officially sponsored initiative.

Bengalis were oppressed and even killed because of their language, so we feel the pain of our Muslim brothers in Pakhtunkhwa at the plight of their language rights in Pakistan. Here are my proposals and this is all independent of any government and taking advantage of modern technology and the internet.

    1. Pashto has been derided as a vernacular tongue for the "rural peasantry" as opposed to the supposedly richer imperial languages of Farsi (Dari) and Urdu, the language of Kabul and Delhi of the Durrani and Mughal empires.

To combat this perception many of the world's great classics should be translated in to Pashto and even broadcast on Youtube.

    a: Science

Great scientific works by Newton for example, works in engineering, biology, chemistry should be translated.

Pashto-language books should then be produced in PDF format as well as hard copies and the whole book should be recorded by an eloquent Pashto-speaker and then uploaded on Youtube.

b: The same for other subjects such as history, politics, economics.

This way Pashtuns will see Pashto being used for educated discourse and it will lose some of the stigma it has in both Pakistan and Afghanistan as a language not appropriate for "educated discussion".

    2. In addition to translating world classics and masterpieces in to Pashto, with the use of online technology other videos or PDF books can be made in fields such as science, engineering, economics etc.

"we" feel the pain? Who is "we"? You're not the representative of Bengalis everywhere, There's no consensus of Bengalis who endorse your opinions you're just one guy with a creepy Pashtun fetish and secretly day dreams about being Pashtun because you have an inferiority complex. I bet if you had a choice of being a Bengali vs. Pashtun, you'd pick Pashtun.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elementary and secondary education department is understood to have decided to remove chapters on Pakhtun leader Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and his poet son, Ghani Khan, from the Pashto book for 12th grade in the province, it is learnt http://www.dawn.com/news/1102598/no-...llabus-anymore

He is always reporting others like the article above and some of his comments. If he is paid then you are also paid by some one. Why we always assassinate the character of the person, why not oppose his ideas critically ?

Do you think what he quoted above is incorrect? What status Pashto has in Pakistan and even in Afghanistan? It is a second class language only spoken, not written or read and has some real official status.

In Afghanistan at least it has some official status but in Pakistan Pashto has no status at all. Pashtun nationalists are dubbed as anti state elements while the constitution of Pakistan itself provide for the promotion of all regional languages.

Pashtuns hate their language. They are proud Pashtuns but for language they never feel any pride or responsibility. Especially the Pashtuns in southern Pashtunkhwa like Bannu , no body believes in language nationalism.

Everybody writes and reads in Urdu and never in Pashto. except few poets, Pashto in southern districts is almost dead. A common man only speaks in Pashto but never read or write in Pashto. I do not know a single private school in Pashtun Pakistan where Pashto is taught. Bengalis fought for their language, but Pashtun even do not mention their language in any campaign.

If a Bengali feels him self to be a Pashtun or feels better amongst Pashtuns, then we must welcome him. You also cannot represnet all Muslims but try to impose your irrational ideas on the name of reason and Islam.

As you are against nationalism, you cannot digest nationalist ideas of some one being proud to be a Pashtun, a Bengali or a Bengali Pashtun. You better create your Mutazila caliphate in the deserts of Yemen, and stop discouraging creative and nationalist tigers like the Bengal Tiger. He is the most productive member of this site.

Pashtuns hate their language sadly and have adopted regional languages like farsi and urdu. The problem with us is that we are always interested in learning other people's languages but nobody is interested in learning ours because most people i've heard say its a "barbaric tribal language." That's just sick and offensive. Most indians who are so obsessed with Pakhtuns don't even know what language their fellow pathans speak which is just sad.

I feel like if we do not promote pashto in Afghanistan as the linuga franca, then our language will slowly become extinct.

You are a sick twisted individual and you have no authority to criticize anyone on their views or on their nationality. This whole forum knows you are a troll and try to constantly ignore you for it.

actually Pashto is very beautiful language. Pashto sounds 100 times better then rural Punjabi. Punjabi seems to be very rough. I think this is also one of the reason why many punjabis have ditched their own language and adopted Urdu as their mother tongue.

^ i am not in favor of this though, all regional provincial languages must survive. No language deserves to die. Pashto needs to be promoted through out the country in my opinion. Understanding of language and culture can defiantly unite people much more.

As for Urdu, it is already a national language, so there is no need to make Urdu as the main provincial language, taking over the regional languages, I am not sure why people are doing that

Is not it an irony that the PTI govt has excluded Bacha Khan and Ghani Khan sons of the soil from course books but in Punjab, the govt has included Bagat Singh in the course although I have high respect for Bagat Singh for being a freedom fighter, martyr, and revolutionary and appreciate the step by the Punjab govt.
