  • Abdullah leads Ghani in first partial results of Afghan vote: officials

KABUL: Former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah is leading his closest rival Ashraf Ghani in the Afghan presidential election, the country’s Independent Election Commission (IEC) said Sunday.

“Today we announce the partial results of 26 provinces with 10 percent of votes counted, these include (provinces) in the north, south, east, west and Kabul,” said Yousuf Nuristani, the IEC chief.

“With 500,000 votes from 26 provinces Dr Abdullah is leading with 41.9 percent; Dr Ashraf Ghani has 37.6 percent and is in second; and Zalmai Rassoul has 9.8 percent in third position.”

A run-off election between the two leading candidates will be triggered if no single candidate gains more than 50 percent of the vote when the final results are announced in late May.

Of the eight provinces for which results have not been announced, two are in the north (Badakhshan and Baghlan), two in the east (Khost and Paktia), two in the south (Ghazni and Wardak), and one in the south-west (Ghor).
Abdullah, who was born to an ethnic Pashtun father and a Tajik mother, is more associated with the northern Tajiks.

More than seven million people defied bad weather and Taliban threats of violence to vote in Saturday’s first round of the election, earning praise from world leaders.

Ahead of the vote there were fears that a repeat of the massive fraud which blighted Karzai’s re-election in 2009 would undermine the winner’s legitimacy at a testing time for the war-torn country.

So,these are the only officially released numbers now.The other we have seen in the past week were certainly not true

Even,I thought Ashraf Ghani might win but now seem not possible,

Ashraf ghani can form coalition with Zalmai rassoul but again Coalition govt won't be Good for the future of Afghanistan.

Lets see what happens in the coming week

This may also be the result that the government wants us to see. It could possibly be to exert pressure on Ghani to enter in to coalition and power - sharing with Rasoul and current power holders. I am speculating but it could not be further than truth. Think about it.

What was the method they used it counting the votes. The IEC should reveal and explain this to the public for the sake transparency. What is important is the motive of the government in this whole episode.

Pashtuns will never accept a Tajik president. I think now every TajikUzbekHazara is arming themselves for the inevitable civil war that will follow when Abdullah^2 becomes president.

            Arming yourself with what?
            With your kalaush and patoo?

            You better do that.

Afghansitan is a republic, there is no such thing as a coalition gov. Coalition gov takes place in democracies where the head of state ie prime minister is chosen by parliament which is usually the party leader.

its a big game when ghani was leading and published the results of counted votes, the election commission banned his we site to do so. when abdulla is leading its ok to pulish the results.
it depends which votes are counted. from north or south?

Just compare the programmes these people have.

Does anyone really think that Abdullah² is in any field even close to be as knowledgable as Ghani is?

Although I reject Ghani because he chose a war criminal as his running mate and could become the president of Afghanistan in the case something happed to him, Ghani is the only person who has technical abillities to the job.

He is not a dimwit war mongerer and wannabe-Dr.
He was a lecturer at John-Hopskins University for years.
That atleast means something in contrast to being the mouthpiece of a civil-war faction accepting occupation just to prepare for an upcoming civil-war.

Only 10% votes are officially counted. Let us wait what will happen in the remaining 90%. My choice is Ghani . I know him personally. Have talked to him many times. He has a great vision. I asked him about Dostum and his reply was so wise

Did prophet Muhamamd not forget the past of Omar and of all of his enemies in Mecca? Is Dostum now a warlord or a believer in democracy? Dostum is now part of democracy. I need Uzbak votes. Dostum is the only one who sought apology for his past.

dostum is comparable to the likes of omar ibn al khattab according to ghani? i thought this guy was supposed to be intelligent.

who knew that running for public office was grounds for the legal and moral impunity of wholesale murder.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Abdullah is basically the Northern Alliance minus Dostum (not that NA warlords weren't already in the administration but at least it has some nominal Pashtuns), that sure will be well received by the Pashtun population.

Why is everyone blowing this out of proportion? 90-95% of the vote is uncounted.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!
