Sorry again,THis is not a myth.They invaded afghanistan to get access to warm water and not to get closer to india.If they really were serious about only getting a land route upto india.they would have Invaded Gilgit baltistan of Pakistan which would have given them access to tajikistan or USSR back than.

You should know this region most important resource is "warm water".

by all accounts, the soviet invasion was not something which was planned by the soviets but was reluctantly agreed to because of the circumstances in afghanistan. this was never a wholehearted adventure on the part of the russians, not to mention the fact that they announced the withdrawal process halfway during the war.
