when the talibs got support from saudis and pakis, massoud got it from 6 other countries. its like when occupation supporters having the nerve to call out the talibs on their obvious paki support while dismissing their support by dozens of nations on top of the 100,000 plus troops and contractors.

Massoud did not bring thousand of foreigners to afghanistan to kill his own people as taliban did.

Rabbani government was a mess, thats true. But when you are at war its just impossible to consolide a state. Taliban just "won" war against Massoud because they had thousand of volunteers in pakistan ready to join them while massoud only had 15000-20000 troops. Talibans had heavy casualties far more than massoud... but they could afford it because they outnumbered massoud. I always quote taloqan battle: massoud had 300 casualties while talibans had several thousands.. taliban won lol

well that's massouds ill fortune that the tajiks north of afghanistan were mostly secular and non nationalistic who wanted nothing to do with the war in afg unlike the support that the taliban found across the border. massoud at his end had rallied all the minorities in his favour and even some pashtuns while the united states supported in him in imposing sanctions against the taliban, nevermind all the other states that supported the northern alliance. the battles mean nothing, its the war that matters. people remember the soviet victory in ww2 despite heavy losses, not nazi battle victories where they didn't lose close to their enemies.

back then, i would of expected massoud to at least come close to taking kabul after the taliban drove him out but all he did was what hekmatyar did against him, indiscriminately rocket the city.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Northern alliance was a joke, bro. Most of hazers and uzbeks joined Massoud once they were defeated by talibans. Massoud was alone and had no support of them. Mazari was dead, Dostum fled to Turkey,.. just few pashtuns joined him such as Abdul Haq.

Massoud had no capability to recapture Kabul. Many friends of mine were in Bagram at the time when taliban took over Kabul. Massoud attacked several times but was unable to recapture the city. Your claim on massoud rocket kabul makes no sense because at the time he was far away from kabul and fighting around bagram.

And indeed people remember victories. Sometimes I just wonder what would happen to afghanistan if massoud won. Massoud was a great warrior but one awful politician. Anyway he did a good job in north and northeast afghanistan setting stable institutions while talibans were just unable to create a state even when 80% afghanistan was under their control.

On USA, you are wrong. USA always backed talibans after all they were a "firewall" against iranian influence in central asia.

history doesn't agree with that considering the US sanctions on the taliban government and air attacks against the country during that taliban era.

If America financed or supported Taliban, then why did they have to topple them?

                  Which sanctions? lol

The August 1998 bombings of Afghanistan and Sudan (codenamed Operation Infinite Reach by the United States) were American cruise missile strikes on terrorist bases in Afghanistan and a pharmaceutical factory in Sudan on August 20, 1998. The attack was in retaliation for the bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania which killed 224 people (including 12 Americans) and injured 5,000 others.

USA bombed afghanistan only twice before 11 september and was due to terrorist attacks.

USA lost all his interest in afghanistan after russian withdrawal. But talibans were hardcore anti-iranians and a saudi proxy... enemy of my enemy.. you know

The State Department characterized Afghanistan in 1999 as “the primary safe haven for terrorists”. But the country was never designated as a state sponsor of terrorism because of the State Department’s concern that this determination would constitute a de facto recognition of the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. However, the Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 created a new designation category—noncooperation. Section 330 prohibits sale of arms to any country the president determines and certifies is not cooperating fully with US antiterrorism efforts. In May 1997, the Clinton administration certified Afghanistan for the first time as not cooperating with US antiterrorism efforts. Apart from the seven state sponsors, Afghanistan is the only country currently certified as not fully cooperating with US antiterrorism efforts.4

Because Islamic fundamentalist terrorists continued to train and operate out of Afghanistan, and more specifically because the Taliban continued to harbor Osama bin Laden and his terrorist networks that were believed to be responsible for bombing two US embassies in Africa, the Clinton administration imposed comprehensive sanctions on the Taliban in 1999. The executive order banned all trade with the areas in Afghanistan under Taliban control, froze Taliban assets in the United States, and prohibited financial contributions to the Taliban by US persons.

On 15 October 1999, citing the failure of the Taliban authorities to respond to this demand, the Council applied broad sanctions under the enforcement provisions of the UN Charter. In resolution 1267 (1999), it noted that Usama bin Laden had been indicted by the United States for the August 1998 embassy bombings and demanded that the Taliban faction - never recognized as Afghanistan's legitimate government - turn him over to the appropriate authorities to be brought to justice. The sanctions, imposed on 14 November following non-compliance, included the freezing by States of all funds and other financial resources owned or controlled by the Taliban.

                        • Now if the US supported the Taliban, why did they not recognize their government in 96 after taking Kabul before the Bin Laden drama?

Come to think of it, how many instances of US interventionism can you name where the Americans have NOT switched their policies around?

The Americans, lets face it, fought a known proxy war in Afghanistan during the 80s. There was an inwards flow of $$, expertise and arms at that time and the Mujahids had open US moral support.
