PESHAWAR: Begum Nasim Wali Monday questioned the pardon offered by the Awami National Party (ANP) leader Asfandyar Wali Khan to the estranged party workers and stressed that he should seek apology from the entire Pakhtun nation for the dubious role he played during the last several years.
“What sort of clemency have you announced? What was the fault of the party workers? You should ask for apology as you are responsible for the current situation that the Pakhtuns are faced with,” said while addressing the gathering organised in connection with the death anniversaries of Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan and Khan Abdul Wali Khan here at the Nishtar Hall.
Asfandyar Wali in a speech at a public gathering at Charsadda on Sunday announced clemency for estranged ANP workers and said the party would welcome all those who had quit it in the past.
The gathering was organised by the splinter group of Pakhtun Students Federation that is supporting Nasim Wali. In November last year, the elderly widow of Khan Abdul Wali Khan held a press conference and accused Asfandyar Wali and other leaders of ruining the party. Later, she announced to form her own faction of the ANP.
However, to the surprise of many Nasim Wali didn’t announce the formation of her own party and instead said she would announce the future line of action that after visiting different districts of the province.
Lamenting the present unrest in the country, she said: “Pukhtuns are peace-loving people, but due to the wrong policies of the government and of our party the situation has come to the point that Pakhtun is killing Pakhtun, Muslim fighting Muslim and no one can ask why it’s happening.”
This was the first time in the history of ANP that two separate gatherings were held for observing the death anniversaries of the two venerated party leaders. The ANP led by Asfandyar Wali observed the event on Sunday at his village, Wali Bagh, while the Nasim Wali faction organised the gathering at the Nishtar Hall Peshawar. Without naming the Pakistani establishment, she questioned the formation of training camps for ‘mujhadeen’ during the Afghan war. “The government made training camps and sponsored the fighters. People used to call Taliban as our children. When you (security establishment) were so strong in making them [Taliban], then dismantle them as well,” she remarked.
Nasim Wali said: “We don’t know how many groups are operational. Who would bring these different groups of the Taliban and under the command of whom?” She reminded that Bacha Khan and Wali Khan had warned against interference in the affairs of the neighbouring country as it would bring devastation to our own land.
It was interesting to note that former ANP lawmaker and present leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Farid Khan Toofan also attended the gathering and made a speech. Although he didn’t announce to join the party, Nasim Wali presented him a red cap and announced that he had joined the party.
She criticised the previous ANP-led provincial government and the party leadership. She said there was no place in her party for people who believe in contracts, commissions, kickbacks and “easy loads”. “I have a clean past like Bacha Khan and Wali Khan and will never allow people whose sole motive is to earn money through politics to hijack the party,” she declared.
Farid Toofan in his emotional speech severely criticised Asfandyar Wali and termed him a liar and a dishonest and corrupt person.
He said the current situation of the country needs people of stature like Bacha Khan and Wali Khan. “We can get rid of this mess by following the teachings of both the great leaders,” he opined. He also asked Asfandyar Wali to seek apology from the Pakhtuns as he had destroyed the Pakhtun nation.
Former ANP lawmakers Abdur Rahman Khan of Kafoor Dheri and Ateefur Rahman, Rasheed Khan of Swabi, Bashir Sherpao and others also spoke on the occasion.Lawangeen Khan, the son of late Sangeen Wali Khan and the grandson of Nasim Wali, was also present on the occasion. The Nishtar Hall was full to capacity as a large number of people attended the function. Famous Pashto singer Fayyaz Kheshgi sang the Pakhtun national song.
