  • World's richest have same wealth as 3.5 billion poorest

The combined wealth of the world's richest 85 people is now equivalent to that owned by half of the world's population – or 3.5 billion of the poorest people – according to a new report from Oxfam.

In a report titled "Working for the Few" released Monday, the global aid and development organization detailed the extent of global economic inequality created by the rapidly increasing wealth of the richest, warning of the major risks it poses to "human progress."

According to the report, 210 people have become billionaires in the past year, joining a select group of 1,426 individuals with a combined net worth of $5.4 trillion.

It added that the wealth of the richest one percent of people in the world now amounts to $110 trillion, or 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the world's population.

"This massive concentration of economic resources in the hands of fewer people presents a significant threat to inclusive political and economic systems," the report said.

"Instead of moving forward together, people are increasingly separated by economic and political power, inevitably heightening social tensions and increasing the risk of societal breakdown," it added.

The report comes ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos which kicks off later this week, and Oxfam is calling on the global political and business leaders attending the meeting to take steps to turn around the rapidly exacerbating inequality.

Oxfam said that based on its polls conducted across the world, it is believed that there are many laws and regulations designed to benefit the rich.

"A survey in six countries (Spain, Brazil, India, South Africa, the UK and the U.S.) showed that a majority of people believe that laws are skewed in favor of the rich," the report said.
Oxfam singled out India as an example, where the number of billionaires increased from less than 6 to 61 in the past decade, concentrating approximately $250 billion among a few dozen people in a country of 1.2 billion.

"What is striking is the share of the country's wealth held by this elite minority, which has skyrocketed from 1.8 percent in 2003 to 26 percent in 2008," the report said.
Oxfam said that India's billionaires acquired their wealth in 'rent thick' sectors – industries where profits are dependent on access to scarce resources – "made available exclusively through government permissions and therefore susceptible to corruption by powerful actors, as opposed to creation of wealth."

This is the reality, rest of us are slaves of the rich. This is what modern economic system / Capitalism is like. Most of the world is still suffering from poverty.

Poverty is a vicious circle while wealth is a virtuous circle. Money begets money. If you have 100, you can make 100 more and then you have 200. This 200 become 400 and so on.

Poor has zero or 10 and spends it in food etc and cannot or does not invest it. Saving is earning and if poor starts saving, they earn and this earning can be invested and you break the viscous cycle of poverty.

I am of the opinion that poor is poor because of his/her own thinking and actions. Except smugglers and corrupt people all the wealthy people are rich because of their thinking and hard work. They do not rob poor. Poor is poor by choice not by default or because of rich.

What hard work for example? Give us a break down of the current top 10 wealthiest people and the processes they had gone through to acquire their wealth.

It doesn't work that way. You work a day and get 2 dolors, afterwards you spends those 2 dolors on food. Unless someone can survive without food and water, they wouldn't be able to save up.

It not a magic trick where someone duplicate 100 dolors to 200 etc. One can only be born to a rich family, you cannot work yourself up to become rich. Very few rich people have worked themselves up to their position.

Of course there is the alternative of getting an education and by that acquire wealth. The problem is that also requires money, unless you were lucky enough to be born in a socialistic society.

Poor people who lives in a capitalistic or poor country have very few option available to them. The word investment is only available to rich people and to some extent middle class.

The rich families also started from some where. There was no this much wealth in the world 100 or 200 years back. With knowledge based economies people started getting wealth. Poor is usually ignorant and in most cases even illiterate.

Hard work is not digging drains but management. managing wealth, creating more wealth is management, entrepreneurship which is the most important of the 4 factors of production. The other three are land, labor and capital. Rich have these 4 while poor has only labor or some times a little piece of land. If poor is a good manager then can have a small size business and can grow to be one day rich.

One of the definitions of Hardwork is strenuous, intensive labor, either physically and mentally.

Badlun by your post it seems to me you don't have even BASIC knowledge about how Economics and Wealth Accumulation Works. You also avoided my earlier question.

it's not that easy to get to that rank of richness by managing your money properly or working hard for it only. most of these people have had this money gathered over many generations combined with handwork, proper investment/managment skills as well as successful economical system.
people living in poverty don't have any of that. not the education on proper management nor the system. they can work hard all they want and they still will struggle unless that changes.
