US Tried to Manipulate Afghan Poll: Robert Gates - The New Indian Express

Former defence secretary Robert Gates has said that US tried to eject Afghan President Hamid Karzai by manipulating presidential election in 2009, media reported Friday.

The revelations made by Gates in his memoirs -- Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary of War" -- is scheduled for release next week and covers the war in Afghanistan, The Guardian reported.

"It was all ugly: our partner, the president of Afghanistan, was tainted, and our hands were dirty as well," Gates is quoted as writing in his memoirs.

Karzai has long claimed that the US tried to manipulate the poll to remove him from office, while Washington insisted it was an impartial supporter of democracy.

The then top US diplomat Richard Holbrooke supported Karzai's rivals in the hope of pushing the poll to a second round that the incumbent would lose, Foreign Policy magazine reported.

Karzai has cited concerns about foreign interference in the poll to choose his successor later this year as one of the reasons for the delay in signing a long-term security pact with the US to keep troops in the country after 2014.

The deal is unlikely to be signed on the timetable the US government would like, the ambassador to Kabul warned in a secret cable leaked to the Washington Post.

US politicians and the military want it sealed early this year to allow for a smooth withdrawal and planning for next year if any troops stay on.

US-Afghan ties have been strained by a string of disagreements over civilian deaths, election planning and other issues, including the release of dozens of men Karzai says are innocent and the US claims are a serious security threat.

Washington insists that if there is no deal, it will resort to its "zero option" and take all troops home.

A White House spokesperson has, however, strongly denied Gates's claims.

Gates served as the Pentagon chief for nearly five years, which started from former president George W. Bush's second term and continued into Obama's first term at his request.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

It seems that this was driven by a need to have a more willing puppet in Kabul with Abdullah Abdullah who would fully support the US/NATO war and their objectives rather then a puppet like Karzai who caused problems with what was called his 'irrational, sporadic' behavior when he criticized the US/NATO war.

There can be no free and fair elections when their is a foreign occupation (in fact there cant be proper democratic elections at all- its fake), and an ongoing insurgency. Any 'elected' government that is propped up by a foreign presence can never be a representative of the people.

So now we are getting some light on the reason why Karzai is not signing the BSA.

Karzai is a loser. He is just playing the "patriot" card. He just wanna pot ray himself as a true afghan and a true pashtun by releasing some pashtun inmates from Bagram. He will face same end than Dr Najeeb. Mark my words.

For the US/NATO war policy makers, the 'elections' were a choice between a more compliant puppet (Abdullah Abdullah) and a less compliant puppet (Karzai).

karzai is a clown, first he calls a loya jirga full of his allies, pleads with them to accept the bsa, then turns around saying he won't sign it until his demands are met and leaves it to his successor. so while his enemies aren't buying his 2 faced act, he has pissed off his own allies.

I feel like Mr. Gates will have the same fate like Edward Snowden for releasing top secret information from the white house.

Gates is a neocon. His book is to 1) get his personal thoughts out 2) to make money.

At least it got Mojadiddi to go back to Denmark, finally, haha.

Absolutely, I wouldn't count that as clarity in any measure regarding Karzai's reluctance on the BSA. He has to view it as his own suicide note (for now), and is working something that we aren't seeing to make it not so. Not to mention he's desperately trying to shake the Shah Shuja claim... in the end, nothing will work--I agree, he'll either be in Rome like Zahir Shah or dangling from Najeeb's gallows.

It seems he has hijacked the BSA as last leverage he could use before he departs.

Firstly, the signing or non-signing of the BSA is as irrelevant as the SPA which was already signed in 2012. Without Pakistan NATO supply routes, this war is done (the major route through KP is closed).

Dont you all think that a comparison of Karzai to Najib is far fetched? Shah Shuja is more appropriate, and in that case, he would be directly following his footsteps by giving out feelers (refusal to sign BSA, freeing prisoners) to the Afghan insurgency. A more appropriate comparison is that he is possibly on the same path as Scotland's Robert Bruce. One can never underestimate anyone.

There is no dispute that he has been a puppet by simple design of the US/NATO war. With this latest news though, I dont know how much that label holds.

In my opinion, he simply got cold feet when the time had come to sign the BSA- thoughts of his legacy, his family name, what would place him in Afghan history as a traitor. .

Nonsenses. If USA wants Karzai out, they would just kill him just like they did with his brother few years ago. You are underestimating them.

Ahmad Karzai was killed by the Taliban, not by the US.

The BSA is entirely relevant--perhaps not in the legal sense, but in the popular context. The people, GIRoA, and international politics have assigned it significance. Now, its so.

Shah Shuja is a tight parallel and plays into the Popalzai legacy, however, Shah Shuja traded the Koh-i Noor to regain power.. in essence, he purchased a service. All we've seen Karzai do is perform a service for money. Despite Shuja's complete lack of honor and integrity, he still wasn't the prostitute Karzai turned out to be.

As far as the Najeeb parallel, I think people only compare him to Karzai for the sake of how long Karzai can hope to last.

So far, though, Dalrymple had a pretty decent comparison between Karzai and Shuja in the New Yorker (I think it was), but personally I thought Voice of Jihad's was much better.
