  • Pakistan´s intelligent strategy on Pashtuns

    Yesterday evening I was sitting with some friends from Farah having a great dinner. It was really great. We had many issues to talk about like the coming elections, how the future would looks like if X wins or Y wins and what will happen to Afghanistan after withdraw. Soon we came to talk about Pakistan. One of my friends, a young political analyst studying in Hirat moved my attention to Pakistan´s intelligent policies Islamabad follows to control Pashtuns. He told us Islamabad manages to keep Pashtun regions under attack by using its army and Taliban and their both battles against eachother to force many hundred thousands if not millions of Pashtuns out of their homes, jobs and lands and make them move toward Panjab or Sindh where they end as jobless people becoming day laborers, living under low conditions, not being able to earn money from their farms, living in slums and always with fear to get killed by Balochis or Sindhis or Mohajirs, becoming up-rooted from their original homelands. It gives a chance for the Panjabis to expand military into Pashtun lands and start to colonize it and bring them all under their own control. If those displaced people once return back to their lands they will be no more independent and will serve Panjabis. This tactic works well for the Panjabis not being accused to support hidden terrorism against Pashtuns. What do you think about this?

    If this is what Pakistand intends for Pashtuns then we should consider the consequence of this policy:

    Pashtun populated area are already part of Pakistan where there are military garrisons, police and other administrative institutions of the state;

    Civil war with Taliban causing internal fidplacement of Pashtuns costs money and lives of people;

    Internally displaced people will distabilize the relatively stable Punjab and Sindh by upsetying the economy and security;

    Unemployment and poverty already burdens the Pakistani society. Increase in poverty and instability harms the country even further;

    This will result into more crime, poverty, insecurity and civil unrest;

    If this is what Pakistan is willing to accept in exchange for dominance of Pashtun populated areas then it makes absolutely no sense. Because as mentioned earlier, those areas are already occupied and dominated by Pakistan.

    This policy your friend is talking about only works for someone who want to occupy another country. Since this is not the case, then it doesnt make any sense.

    Your friend, did he tell you how he discovered this genius plan?

      Wow, nice conspiracy theory.

      The main reason why many Pashtuns work in Karachi is because, it is a port city and KPK & Afghanistan do not have ports because they are landlocked, also many Pashtuns have been settling in Punjab for over the past century(the Niazis of Mianwali and Burkis of Jalandar being the earliest), you might ask why?Because Punjab is the land of 5 rivers with fertile plains where it is easier to harvest crops, that's why Punjab is known as the breadbasket of Pakistan and even India.

      KPK has a mountainous terrain, so it's harder to farm, and the FATA region isn't that fertile, but the most important industry in KPK is tourism(which has a lot of potential) and there are minerals underground in FATA, which could help the tribes of FATA get out of poverty, but the only way Pashtuns will be able to get out of poverty is by educating themselves, especially their daughter and vaccinate their children for polio, as well as practice birth control, it's easier to feed 2 children than 12 children, so these are some reasons why rural Pashtuns lag a little behind other ethnics in Pakistan.

      You can blame evil Pakistanis for all your problems, but sometimes the problem is within.

        The Pakistanis are intelligent people. They use devide and rule policies. They destroyed Afghanistan although everyone of us know behind Afghanistran´s destruction Pakistan has its hands yet we still fight against eachother. Pashtuns vs Hazaras Uzbeks vs Tajiks Uzbeks Hazaras vs Pashtuns... The Pashtuns in Karachi or Panjab are poor and defenseless. But I was also sceptical to his claim. Maybe there are some trues behind it.

          Your friend is clueless. There was never the plan to colonize KPK and FATA by Punjab. After 1971, the policy was to keep the integrity of remaining pakistan tight. For that special attention was given to NWFP and balochistan as both provinces had presence of separatist ambitions. For such reason pakistan interfered in afghanistan which at the end backfired in the form of taliban insurgency in pashtun belt of pakistan. Taliban were never meant by pakistani establishment to operate in pakistan, TTP is reaction to musharaf decision to take u-turn on afghanistan and become partner in crime with america.
          The millions of IDPs that you are talking about, are result of military operations to eliminate TTP. Most of them, about 2.5 million, are from FATA and most of them are residing in KPK not punjab or karachi. The ones in karachi and punjab are mostly economic migrants. And to correct your friend, neither punjabis nor sindhis are killing pashtun migrants. The war is between mohajirs and pashtuns, both are killing each other.
