Progress in ending harmful practices, intimidation and violence against women and girls can enable them to fully and actively participate in the country's political and economic development. This contributes to improvements in the lives of all Afghans.
In recent months Afghanistan has witnessed several cases of violence, including abduction and targeted killings by anti-government elements aimed at female government officials and public figures.
Such deplorable attacks must stop as they discourage women and girls from pursuing careers in the public arena for fear of losing their lives.
The United Nations in Afghanistan also stresses the critical need to engage the country's youth in ending violence against women and girls. The international community has spent millions of dollars in projects promoting Elimination of Violence against Women (EVAW). Based on these efforts in 2009 EVAW was enacted through a decree of President Karzai. EVAW law criminalizes child marriage, forced marriage, selling and buying of women for the purpose or under the pretext of marriage, ba'ad (giving away a woman or girl to settle a dispute), forced self-immolation and 17 other acts of violence against women including rape and beating.
Do you agree that gender violence is caused by the perceived lower status of women around the world? What can be done to raise the status of women and girls in Afghanistan?
