Afghan president Hamid Karzai has accused Washington of behaving like a colonial
power and criticized US officials to pressure the Afghan government for signing the
bilateral security agreement.
Karzai said that the US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, James Dobbins
has said that there would be no peace in Afghanistan if the pact between Kabul and
Washington is not signed.
While speaking during an interview with the french newspaper Le Monde, president
Karzai said that the remarks by James Dobbins regarding the bilateral security agreement
could be interpreted that Washington will cause trouble for the Afghanistan if the pact
is not signed.
“If you don’t sign the agreement, we will provoke fighting in your country, we will cause
trouble,” Karzai told Le Monde. “Even if they are serious, they can’t push us up against
the wall,” Karzai said, adding that, “What I’ve been hearing in recent days and heard in
the past is classic colonial exploitation.” He also added that the people of Afghanistan
will not accept the pressures by United States. “Afghans will not submit, they have
already fought colonial masters,” Karzai said.
The remarks by president Hamid Karzai comes as tensions between Kabul and Washington
remains unresolved to finalize the pact by the end of the year.
A number of high level US government officials including John Kerry and US national security
advisor Susan Rice visited Afghanistan to help finalize the differences between the two
nations, however president Karzai insists that his demands should be met before he signs
the agreement. President Karzai insists that United States should immediately end operations
on Afghan homes and practical steps should be taken to start Afghan peace process with the
Taliban group, in a bid to end the decade old war in the country.
