Russia of course; Russia is known to be an energy-bully.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Yanukovych wants to stand astride, one leg in EU and second in Rusia, and to milk two cows. Finally he will be on the side of those who will give more money (for corrupted government).

The perception of the intelligentsia here is that various states like Georgia and Ukraine are being sought after as strategic real-estate by Euro-America versus Russia.

I was told by some fair minded Ukranians that the rural regions in some geographic parts of the country are pro Russian and that urban elites in Kiev are pro American/EU.

Justin Raimando has an article about this:

Tell me what you think of his article.

I heard about similar division - Western Ukraine are pro EU and Eastern (rural areas) are pro Russia. Ties between Ukraine and Russia have never been cut.

Actions of Yanukovych from last year shows that he played on two sides. Although recent opinion says that that since the beginning he cheated and never had any intention to join the EU.
The president and his entourage are aware that accession to EU, would, to some extent, affect public finance sector and increase control over spending public money.

Well, energy blackmail is a fact. Ukrainian economy is linked to Russia.
It's also true, that Merkel expected 'total capitulation'. But there were also voices saying that Ukraine is not ready for accession, that there is no freedom of speech, no democracy and human rights are violated. I remember our MoFA said so and was criticized.

The article's author said nothing about demonstrators and their background apart from the fact that they are hooligans. I do not agrre with the sentence starting from words: "pro-EU hooligans...". They aren't hooligans. People on 'European Maydan' and elsewhere in Kiev are perfectly organized. I remember few days ago our newspapres published the copy of leaflets given to demonstrators, saying how they should act. All there was about paceful demonstration. Of course there are many provocateurs among them and those who seek for aggro. But as a whole it is a demonstration of people who want to change their government. Not only because they are Eurocrats, also because they are fed up with the president and co. Some of them may perceive the accesion as a ability to change. Perhaps some of demonstrators aren't aware of all consequences of accession to the EU.
Nationalist tendencies also play important role in the protests. Ukraine is a independent coutry, has its own language and it is time about to loosen Russian ties.

Russia has never accepted the fact of Soviet Union collapse and will never accept for example the loss of naval bases on the Black Sea. Putin have something to fight for. I don't know why EU want so badly Ukraine among EU countries. There must be pure policitcs behind. In the future may lead to tension between EU and Russia, but for sure it won't be a second cold war. Economic ties between Germany and Russia are too strong.

"Eu is failed socialistic experiment" - I can see many advantages resulting from EU but I think that its unlimited expansion will lead to separatist tendencies and finally to the collapse.

It's a strategy; if he speaks up, that would be meddling in Kiev's affairs.
