Karzai Refuses to Sign U.S. Security Deal

Wants conditions of "security," "peace" and "a proper election" met
    By Courtney Subramanian @cmsubNov. 24, 20130

Afghanistan’s president declined to sign a security deal approved by a group of Afghan elders, delaying the process to plan for a United States’s military presence after 2014.
Hamid Karzai said Sunday he would not sign the Bilateral Security Agreement unless the conditions of “security,” “peace” and “a proper election” on April 5 had been met, the Associated Press reports. The Loya Jirga, a national consortium of Afghan leaders and tribe elders who overwhelmingly approved the deal, urged Karzai to approve it before the end of the year.
President Barack Obama’s administration has warned Afghanistan leaders that if the deal is not approved before next year, it could compromise the agreement to allow U.S. soldiers to remain to train and assist government security with a mounting Taliban insurgency.

I thought he was going to sign it in a hurry. Looks like he is thinking of his legacy (whatever is left), and got cold feet on this meaningless tissue paper.

In retrospect, Karzai was opposed to the US escalation of the war with the surge in 2010. I do recall that on CNN with Larry King, he said there is no need for more troops. That was the last time I had a favorable opinion of him. He was smart enough to know that such a situation would make his regimes position weaker, and that the Taliban would grow stronger. US did not care about what he said. US said they had UN mandate to authorize continuation of war in Afghanistan.

And the elders approved of this stupid deal while Karzai objected to it? I can't believe they said yes, i've lost all faith in Afghans for almost selling their country.

Have you seen who is present at this sham meeting from the pictures? Most of all participants are self serving Tajiks, Hazaras, and Uzbeks. Then you got the Pashtun sell outs sitting on their chairs who have made millions out of this war. Keep in minds, nearly all the people at this sham meeting were handpicked by the Karzai regime and supporting actors in the first place. Spanta selected all the people.

Its quite amazing how these personalities craft a narrative.

His stated reasons for leaving: "We request for this agreement to be signed soon and if President Karza does not sign, then I promise you that, though I have been a servant to this nation for the past thirty five years, I will resign," Mujadadi said. "I will resign from everything and will emigrate from this country and will say that I have fled the bad policies of our government."

His actual reason for leaving: would be to protect his life and ill gotten gains. Im sure his family already are set up in mansions in Dubai.

I don't know.. I could see him in an Italian villa with the rest of the royalists, but your sentiments are exactly what I perceived. His faux-disgust is actually justified fear.

Mojadidi and Hamida Bibi are just playing good cop and bad cop. Once again, Karzai thinks he is fooling people.. he is not. Every piece of the historical record shows that he always caves - whether it comes to civilian issues or these current ones. In the least he is just pushing the buck to the next guy but set the stage. Come on guys, use your common sense - if he was actually not going to sign it he would simply say so. This is just political grandstanding for other Western emigres and the fact that he wants the historical record to record these supposed instances of obstinate behavior.

Bottom line: Don't trust him, he is and will always be a fool.

You are definitely right that puppet is playing to the choir as he has in the past. I think he is bucking it to the next guy who gets elected in the sham elections, and does not want his signature on it for historical reasons. He could be trying to ensure his brother gets 'elected.'

It is going to be difficult for any candidate running on a Pro-War/Pro-Occupation platform.

Afghan leader sticks to position on security deal

                            By PATRICK QUINN, Associated Press | November 25, 2013 | Updated: November 25, 2013 1:50pm

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan's president says he has told the U.S. national security adviser that he won't back down from his refusal to sign a security agreement with the United States but will instead defer it to his successor.
A statement issued by the office of Hamid Karzai late Monday said that in a meeting with Susan Rice, he also asked for further assurances from the United States that its forces will not raid Afghan homes and that they express a sincere commitment to help start stalled peace talks with the Taliban.
He also reiterated his demand that the United States commit to holding free and transparent elections on April 5.

Karzai is saying he is not going to sign the tissue paper. Is it still all an act? If this continues to be his persistent line, then it looks like he is walking away from this.
