i dont agree with ads that show pashtuns as security gurads or drivers. most of my guards and drivers are punjabies (not that it is a bad thing).. its just stereotyping of pashtuns.. pashtuns are everything from doctors (Some of the best in pakistan).. engernears, businessmen, drivers, and laborers and everything in between..
i havent seen the video though.. so cannt say much.. (Can not open it at work)

This Ufone ad is based on the all-too-common discriminatory stereotyping of Pashtuns as a nation:

1: The actor representing the crime suspect is dressed in traditional Pashtun clothes, thus, for Ufone marketers, a criminal must look like a Pashtun.

2: In the commercial, the Pashtun character does not speak but expresses himself through body language and grunts suggesting he is ineloquent, by a lower degree, uncivilized. Ufone fails to notice that Pashto is a centuries' old vehicle of Pashtun expression. The character on trial does not speak any Pashto of course since it does not belong in Pakistani telecom ads despite the vast consumer base that speaks the language.

3: Since Ufone thinks that everyone using any cellular network other than Ufone is a mark of stupidity, therefore, who better than a traditionally dressed Pashtun to convey the idea which in this ad is coupled with criminality.

4: Once the picture of a Pashtun simpleton is established, there comes the final icing on the cake from Ufone geniuses. The winning lawyer says to the simple Pashtun, who is now a convict for not being smart, that Peshawar's people ARE smart. The sarcasm rankles.

Ufone is probably raking up more customers after making such a 'lol' ad. Some will say 'the end kar di hai Ufone nay yar'. Let's wait for Faisal Qureshi and Jawad to respond, 'Pathan tho hai hi aisay'.
We think that the ad must be taken off air because it is unethical.

- This is Pakistan a.k.a. "Punjabistan", a country ruled by Punjabis who are free to mock and deride the culture of others including Bengalis (before and even after their independence).

- Pashtun soldiers in the "Pakistan" (Punjabi) army are mocked as homosexuals and stupid and told to accept this as it is a "joke", if however these Pashtun soldiers tried to "joke" about Punjabis they would face some sort of disciplinary action.

- In the advert the "criminal" does not have his head uncovered like everyone else, but a hat. Rather than being a prayer hat worn by many in Pakistan it is a Pakol, a traditional hat worn by Pashtuns and viewed in Pakistan as a "Pathan hat".

This is belittling part of the dress and thus identity of Pashtuns.



- The whole advert appeals to the offensive stereotype of the Pashtun as stupid, simple but this time even more dangerously, the Pashtun as a criminal.
He is also regarded as not really a Pakistani as he cannot even communicate in Urdu, Pakistan's language whereas the Punjabis can.

So all of this present Pashtuns as:

- Stupid
- Criminal
- Not true Pakistanis/ even foreigners to an extent
- It is fine to mock and ridicule them

So far there have been no demonstrations by the following Pashtun organizations.

- ANP
- PMAP
- PSO
- Dr Khan Tareekh
- Qawmi Watan Party

and many others.

However if Ufone does not withdraw this advert and apologize to Pakistan's second largest ethnic community then there could be big protests in

- Peshawar
- Islamabad
- Quetta
- Karachi etc

There are tens of millions of Pashtuns in Pakistan and if they all boycotted Ufone, then Ufone would go down.

We hear so much about "Nang" and "Ghairat" but where is it? An advert openly mocking Pashtuns and openly mocking Peshawar can be broadcast like this and there is not a single protest?

The PMAP should at least stage a protest outside of the Ufone head office.

Very true. Calling somebody a Punjabi is considered an insult. Even other Indians are always making fun of Punjabis as some kind of butt of all jokes, they call them Sikh 12 o'clock jokes or "Sardar ji" jokes. In Pakistan Pashtun and Baloch and even Sindhis look down on Punjabis as inferior and uncultured people. Punjabis even look down on themselves that is why Punjabis abandoned even their own mother tongue en-mass and made Urdu the official language of administration, law and education in Punjab because they feel inferior and are ashamed of their own Punjabi language so have tried to swap it for Urdu.
