  • Role and Significance of Social Media in Afghanitan

Social media is a powerful tool that can help in acting as a watchdog and fight all forms of legal, social and political violations. Social media is also a powerful way to unify the citizens. People can talk about their grievances or share their opinions. Social media is a tool that can help in bridging the gap between the government and citizens. A good example would be: women creating awareness among the citizens about women’s rights through the social media, mainly Facebook. According to a new eMarketer report, “Worldwide Social Network Users: 2013 Forecast and Comparative Estimates, nearly one in four people worldwide will use social networks in 2013.” Presidential candidates in Afghanistan are actively participating in social media platforms to attract supporters by presenting their future plans for Afghanistan.
In your opinion, how effective would social media be in Presidential and provincial elections?

    Respectfully,

Social media can play an incredibly positive effect on Afghan media; especially by enlightening the youth. I say the government needs to do more by providing internet access to the Afghan populace. However, politics aside, there is no denial that when compared to the Taliban regime, the current Afghan government has exponentially increased the usage of telecommunication and internet, especially knowing that prior to this current government there was no backbone for the aforementioned services.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

the Taliban had no resources and the current gov had a trillion dollars at their disposal not to mention all the engineers and support to build a Switzerland, and yet all they could do was build something that has 1/3 of their population malnourished, a couple of roads that they use to smuggle money out of the country, build a heroin industry that poisons most of its own population and many others throughout the world, bring back a child abusing practice whom its own leaders are guilty of.

If you want to argue about who did more damage to the afghan population, the Taliban or the current gov, the current gov wins by a huge margin as the main culprits. These are facts that speak for themselves.

That's true, but irrelevant since all I mentioned is that PROGRESS has been made, and I explicitly said 'politics aside'.

              Here are some facts:
Afghanistan is now better in sports.
              Afghanistan now has internet.
Afghanistan now has cell phones, and basic telecommunications with an improving education system
Afghanistan is NOT as safe as it was during the Taliban regime.

As you can see, the discussion here is about PROGRESS, not giving a particular group/ideology brownie points.

You must be living in another planet not to see all this progress since the collapse of the Taliban regime.

                Education:
During the Taliban regime schools were mostly closed and girls could not go to school period. Today in Afghanistan more than 10.5 million students attend school.
The following is list of current universities in Afghanistan, sorted by province and in alphabetical order. During Taliban only Kabul University was partially open.
                Balkh Province
Balkh University, Mawlana Jalaludin Muḥammad Balkhi Institute of Higher Education, Sadat Institute of Higher Education

Nangarhar Province: Alfalah University, Aryana University, Khurasan University, Nangarhar University, Spinghar Higher Education Center

                Banking System:
Afghanistan Banking system was crippled and people were transferring money by Hawalas only, today Afghanistan has a standard and proper banking system and more than 10 private banks operate throughout the country.
                1. Azizi Bank
                2. Kabul Bank

Communication: Afghanistan lacked communication system during the Taliban regime.
Today, Afghan wireless, Roshan, Etisalat and MTN companies provide telecommunication services in Afghanistan
                International relations:
Taliban regime was recognized only by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The state was not recognized in the United Nations. Today, Afghanistan has embassies almost in all countries and is recognized by the United Nations.
Army: Is the backbone of any country. During the Taliban regime Afghanistan lacked army.
Today, Afghanistan has a strong Afghan National Army, Afghan National Police and National directorate of Security.

Well, you kind of made it seem like you were giving brownie points to the afghan gov., and its not about politics, its about facts.

This is the environment the Taliban had to deal with:
                  1. One must realize the that Afghanistan under the Taliban was under sanctions and countries around the world were discouraged from doing business in the country. Resources blocked.
2., Most of the educated people who knew how to administer were either dead or had left the country. Skilled labor shortage.
3., They inherited a destroyed society that knew nothing but war and violence where its economy depended on the drug trade. no economy.
                  4. The country was ruled by violent warlords who enjoyed abusing children. rampant criminality.

Now, Tell me how you would deal with this situation knowing that powerful neighbors are interfering and trying to dominate your society.

Now lets examine the situation with the current Afghan gov, the environment they had to deal with.
                  1. no embargo, unlimited amount of resources available. Free help from all the countries in the world. Every Countries were encouraged to do business in Afghanistan.
                  2. Unlimited amount of Skilled labor was brought to the country.
                  3. This afghan gov had the convenience of inheriting a country that its predecessor had eradicated the drug trade, had eradicated warlords from most of the country, child abusers were not allowed in the gov and were punished.

Now the afghan gov turned that environment into the exact opposite. child abuse is rampant where its leaders are guilty of, warlords are back bringing the drug trade with them. Criminality is rampant, Corruption is rampant where its the most corrupt country in the World.

You must look at what the Taliban inherited and transformed into with no resources and what the Afghan gov inherited and transformed into with unlimited resources. Who really built and who really destroyed. Who progressed and who retrogressed. Now if this was a college project, who would you give an A to and who would you give an F to? can you answer this question?

You keep bringing education into this. According to reports, Education in Afghanistan is a complete failure.

Its safe to say the US have finally realized that they partnered up with the wrong people in Afghanistan. its time to let these idiot go and have them fend for themselves. no need for more American soldiers to die and lengthen the misery of afghans.
