1. Yahya Khan was not a Pashtun
Real Pashtuns belong to a "Khel" tribe and consider those who speak Pashto and are resident in Pakhtunkhwa but not from one of the original Pashtun tribes to be inferior.
For example a Yusufzai or Afridi will consider a "Syed" (alleged descendant of the holy prophet solAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to be inferior to him. Though he will respect the prophet (solAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam) and those who claim lineage to him (solAllahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to a degree, he will still ultimately consider himself superior i.e. Pashtun = superior to non-Pashtun.
A few years ago an American Pakistani from Kohat ran a "Pashtun" forum called "Pashto.org". A Yusufzai who was a former member of that forum told me on MSN in a somewhat contemptuous tone "Mokadaar (forum owner) is not a Pashtun", as this character was a supposed Syed and she looked down on him basically.
Pashtuns also look down on other similar groups of people such as Parachas who are said to be of Arab/Persian origin.
Pashtuns look down on Qizilbashis as not true Pashtuns (they are not, because they are not biologically related to Imraul Qais and are just foreign immigrants).
There are qualitative differences between real Pashtuns and mere Pashto-speakers in Pakhtunkhwa of Hindko, Paracha, Qizilbashi origin.
1. Real Pashtuns belong to a khel (tribe) and can trace their lineage.
2. Real Pashtuns belove in honour and loyalty.
3. Real Pashtuns believe in bravery (Nangyalai and Turyalai)
A real Pashtun believes in honour above pragmatism, in loyalty above surrender.
This mentality is why Pashtuns are less "pragmatic" than Punjabis or from their (and my) perspective more principled, examples.
a: In the 1920s in Iraq, there were Punjabi and Pashtun soldiers serving the British. When the Pashtun soldiers found out the Iraqis were Muslim, they refused to kill them. The Punjabis didn't care.
b: Some Pashtun (and to a degree Balochis as well) soldiers refused to commit atrocities in east Pakistan e.g. a Pashtun unit refused to kill Bengalis when they heard the adhan quoting a hadith that do not kill the people where the adhan is read out.
If you read this thread you can find many quotes from Bangladeshis from a Bangladeshi military forum praising Pashtuns for not carrying out atrocities in East Pakistan (some Pashtuns including an ex-Khudai Khidmatagar) fought on our side.
Yahya Khan as a non-Pashtun does not have this sort of behaviour, willingness to refuse unjust orders and carry out injustice, this is a Pashtun trait that real Pashtuns e.g. Afridis, Jadoons, Shinwaris etc all have.
Yahya Khan was not, is not, and will never be a Pashtun.
He is a traitor, an alcoholic, a loser (who lost half his country in 1971) and a pervert.
Go to a Durrani or Ghilzai in Afghanistan and they will laugh at such a lowlife being considered a Pashtun.
Pashtunkhwa Pashtuns (especially in FATA) would consider him low-caste as a Qizilbashi.
