The foreign affairs ministry of Iran on Sunday condemned attacked on it’s consulate in western Herat province of Afghanistan, which sparked due to violent protests.

Iran’s foreing affairs ministry called the attack as “unacceptable” and called for calm. “While the staffers of our country’s offices in Afghanistan are trying to facilitate the legal transit of Afghan nationals to the Islamic Republic of Iran, such behaviors will obviously have negative consequences,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham quoted by Iran’s Press TV said.
At least one person was reportedly killed and a number of others were injured after clashes erupted between the angry protesters and Afghan police near the Iranian consulate in Herat on Saturday.
Spokeswoman for Iran’s foreing ministry, marzieh Afkham said, “Based on their organizational duties, the local police and security officials should have been present at the scene immediately and prevented any illegal assembly, damage to the office and disruption of the activities of the staffers.”
She also insisted on the need for safeguarding the security of the premises and employees of Iran’s consulates and political offices in Afghanistan.
The protesters had staged demonstrations against the Iranian consulate in Herat province, accusing the consulate officials for misbehaving with the visa applicants.
