Pak Govt. agrees to quit U.S.-led war against terrorism

Posted by News Desk on September 10, 2013 in News, Sourced, Wired, World ยท

Islamabad, Sept. 10 (ANI): Pakistan has agreed to quit the United States-led war on terrorism and implement its own strategy to counter insurgency amid a growing demand from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former cricketer Imran Khan.
The resolution was made at the All Parties Conference (APC) held under the chair of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Monday, The Nation reports.
The government announced that they will determine the means and the mode of fighting the war against terror in the national interest and shall not be guided by the U.S. or any other country, the report added.
Khan has been advocating from day one that Pakistan should disengage from the war on terror first before engaging in negotiations with the Taliban.
Earlier, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Government was finding it difficult to come out of the U.S. influence without support shown from all political parties towards the decision in Parliament. (ANI)

APC good step to rid Pakistan of US war: Imran
    Mumtaz Alvi

    Tuesday, September 10, 2013
    From Print Edition

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan here on Monday welcomed the All Parties Conference (APC) and said it was just the beginning towards extricating Pakistan from the debilitating US anti-terrorism war.

Imran expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the APC and his earlier meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. The PTI chairman, however, said that the initiative was just a beginning towards extricating Pakistan from the US-led war on terrorism and moving towards a national holistic policy on counter-terrorism.

“In many ways, the APC resolution was a vindication of the PTI position demanding ‘give peace a chance’ and the suggested PTI policy of extricating from US war on terror, dialogue, truth and reconciliation,” he maintained.

Imran contended that the clear and strong language used to convey Pakistan’s opposition to drone attacks and to the negative fallout of the US militaristic approach to combating terrorism in this region were good beginnings to move Pakistan to a clearer direction of formulating a cohesive counter-terrorism policy.

Taking the drone issue to the UNSC, he stressed, must also be seen as one of many policy options to counter this illegal US action against Pakistani territory and its people.Imran also said that he was satisfied with his earlier meeting with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and General Kayani and Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak, were also present, where he conveyed his views to them especially about the mistake of sending the Pakistan military to Fata.

PTI chairman said that he got answers to a number of queries he had raised at this meeting. Imran concluded that he hoped there would now be swift drawing up of a comprehensive counter-terrorism policy and strategy and the establishment of a dedicated institutional structure to operationalise the same.
