Taliban ends siege of US military base in eastern Afghanistan

Several hours of gun battle between US forces and Taliban militants have finally come to an end in the Afghan town of Torkham, in Nangarhar Province.


Taliban militants claim to have killed a number of American troopers, but NATO officials deny any fatalities.

Local sources say at least 70 tankers -- most of them carrying fuel to US-led forces, were destroyed during the attack on the military base.

The eastern town is home to one of the largest US military bases.

Afghan and NATO officials say multiple explosions and the subsequent shooting
in the border town left at least five militants dead.

Following the incident, the highway linking Jalalabad city to Torkham was closed.

The road is a main route for NATO supply trucks and is used by US-led forces to
transfer military equipment from Pakistan to Afghanistan. US-led forces are deeply
worried about Taliban’s increasing attacks on NATO supply trucks.

There has been a surge in the number of militants’ assaults against Afghan forces,
foreign troops, and civilians in the war-torn country in recent months.

US-led troops and Afghan forces are falling prey to Taliban attacks on an almost
daily basis.

At least 3,371 foreign soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the US-led
invasion of the country in 2001, which was conducted as part of the so-called war
on terror.

The increasing number of military casualties in Afghanistan has caused widespread
anger in the United States and other NATO member states, undermining public support
for the Afghan war.

Over a decade of the costly US-led war in Afghanistan has failed to end militancy in
the country and the US which has thousands of troops on the ground in Afghanistan
is now trying to sit down for talks with the Taliban militants.
