I'll tell you everything I know.
In early 20th century, there use to be a growing political and social awareness among some of the educated Pashtuns from the South.
While the whole world was moving fast forward, Afghanistan was an isolated impoverished and illiterate society.
During this era, a group of young men started a movement which lateron evolved into Weekh Zalmyan.
They were a collective of young, ambitious nationalists hailing from various Pashtun tribes from Kandahar and other parts of Afghanistan.
Since the royal ramily was against any form or shape of political activism, they quickly started arresting them and executing their leaders.
Weekh Zalmyan were a group of reformers. They did not have a sophisticated political theory to guide their movement. But at some point along the line, they picked up Socialist rhetoric because back then Socialism was the most potent political ideology all across the world. So naturally, a collective of young patriotic Pashtuns who opposed the tyrannical rule of the king inclined towards it.
After the violent repression of Weekh Zalmyan, the group dispersed into small groups. A few of of them later formed the communist party. Nour Muhammad Tarakay was one of them.
Another group was less enthusiast about the whole communist dogma of their counterparts. Still they did have strong socialist inclinations. This second group was distinctively Pashtun. They were inspired by the struggle of Pashtuns across the Durand Line. This is the group that lateron turned into what we now know as Afghan Millat.
While the overtly communist party of Tarakay & co was endorsed by the Russians, the other Socialist party didn't really enjoy any foreign backing. They did occasionally flirt with some foreign entities but without a fruitful result.
Meanwhile the mainly Tajik and Shiite socialist movment that emerged in Central and North Afghanistan distinguished itself from others by choosing a Maoist path rather than moderate socialism or Moskowite Communism.
Afghan Millat is a nationalist movement. They are inspired by mainly German and French philosophy. Their rhetoric is that of a nationalist party with a typical socialist antagonism against the state.
However, during the last few decades of the 20th century, they were forced to go underground or live in exile because of the repressive communist regime in Kabul.
There are several old school members of Afghan Millat who are my distant relatives. They are not very well educated people. But the leadership of Afghan Millat are quite different. They are very highly educated.
But the problem of Afghan Millat is that because they have a man made ideology ( nationalism and socialism) none of them sincerely believes in their cause.
This is why, after the fall of the Taliban regime, Afghan Millatis arrived in Kabul to serve their own personal interests. Afghan Millatis have very high posts in all Karzai governments.
They have enriched themselves with corruption. Due to their corruption and hypocrisy they lost their support among the common people.
Today they are divided into different factions. They have a hard time picking a leader. Plus, allot of their core members don't really live in Afghanistan.
The future doesn't look good for Afghan Millat. It looks like they will disappear altogether in the near future.Originally posted by FirdousiNever talk with Afghans about politics. One afghan millati leader was convicted for child molestation in scandinavia. He then continued his political carreer as if nothing happened.Originally posted by FirdousiNever talk with Afghans about politics.
