  • Continuing Atrocities in Indian Administered Kashmir

By AIJAZ HUSSAIN, Associated Press Writer Aijaz Hussain, Associated Press Writer – Sat Jul 10, 11:11 pm ET
SRINAGAR, India – Security forces fired tear gas and used batons to disperse hundreds of rock-throwing demonstrators, leading authorities to reimpose a curfew in parts of Indian-controlled Kashmir. No injuries were immediately reported.

The tension in the Himalayan region — divided between India and Pakistan — was reminiscent of the late 1980s, when protests against Indian rule sparked an armed conflict that eventually killed more than 68,000 people, mostly civilians.

New clashes broke out Saturday between anti-India protesters and government forces in three different areas of Srinagar, the region's main city, a police officer said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

As part of a new clampdown, thousands of troops patrolled Srinagar's nearly deserted streets and most shops and businesses remained closed. The region's nearly 60 newspapers were unable to publish for a third day.

"We're monitoring the situation closely and will make further decisions accordingly," said Farooq Ahmed, a senior police officer.

The government sent in the army to quell the protests last week. The Indian army had not been used for crowd control since major street demonstrations two decades ago.

Residents say security forces have killed 15 people in recent rallies. Thousands of people carrying black and green protest flags chanted "Indian forces leave Kashmir" as they marched peacefully through the streets.

"Our civil disobedience and peaceful marches will continue until India withdraws its military and paramilitary soldiers from populated areas," said Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, a key separatist leader who led the march.

The tight curfew, initially introduced Wednesday, was lifted late Friday across the Indian-administered region for 24 hours to allow residents to celebrate a Muslim festival. Taking advantage of the brief reprieve, people swarmed grocery shops to buy food and other essentials.

Only about 1,000 devotees visited the revered Dargah Hazratbal shrine to offer prayers at the annual Miraj-un-Nabi festival, which commemorates Prophet Muhammad's night journey to the heavens. In past years, tens of thousands of Muslims thronged the shrine.

Police laid razor wire and erected steel barricades around the shrine to stop any protests.

India and Pakistan have fought two wars over Kashmir. India regularly accuses Pakistan of sending insurgents over the heavily militarized frontier to stir up trouble and has blamed the current protests on Pakistan-based militants bent on destabilizing India, a charge Islamabad denies.

Kashmiri separatists are demanding independence from Hindu-majority India or a merger with Muslim-majority Pakistan.

In 2008, the Indian government awarded 100 acres of land around Amarnath Temple to Hindus - the native Kashmiris were appalled at what they saw as India changing the demographics of the valley (though to be fair to India, Kashmiri demographics have not significantly changed since 1947 and non-Kashmiris cannot own land in Kashmir). Nevertheless, a Kashmir-based independence movement started with hundreds of thousands of people in the streets. Some of the demonstrations were brutally put down by the Indian armed forces, who are notorious for their criminal behavior in Kashmir.

Close to a hundred people may have died during last week month's alone. Kashmiris are caught between Pakistani-sponsored Islamic terrorism and Indian state-backed oppression. They overwhelmingly want independence from both those forces who only want Kashmir for its waterways and geostrategic position on the map.

On humanitarian grounds, the people of Kashmir are in a dire situation.

Their home is strategically very important to the Indians, as well as Pakistanis. The problem in the Indian Held Kashmir is that, India accepting it as a part if its state has allowed the colonization by Hindus from other parts of India. Some of this is because of religious reasons with the Amarnath caves and other shrines being there but, much of it is also to allow a demographic upper hand.

Its not a secret therefore that the Muslims in Kashmir are extremely opposed to this. This has lead to bitter tense and messy confrontation with the Central Indian Govt. and many are killed every year for various reasons including suspicion of waging Pakistani backed Jihad.

The Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and others have reported several times of the Human Rights violations by the Indians.

As I told you earlier on another thread. You shouldnt comment without reading. Do you know about Art. 376? It gives Kashmir as a special status under the Indian constitution under which only Kashmiris, read again, only Kashmiris are allowed to own land in Kashmir. Now how would a colonization by Hindus be possible if that article exists? Moreover LZ too alluded to this fact in his post below the article, if you'd have cared to read.

Your comments show the propaganda that you have been fed.

And about the Amarnath issue, it was unnecessary. Why such hue and cry over a few acres? And the land was going to be leased, not bought for eternity!

And while taking of Hindu colonization of Kashmir why dont you read about what happened to Kashmiri Pandits? Do you know there was a large scale ethnic cleansing in Kashmir where thousands of Hindu families were made to move by the threat of the gun? My friend in Delhi remembers how they had to leave their house in Srinagar in the 80s and move to Delhi after their relatives were killed and they recieved threats. And their own "friendly" Muslim neighbours took over their house within a few weeks. Many of them are still living in refugee camps in Delhi, no jobs, no fixed occupation, no salary. And the worst part, their identity has been destroyed. They wanted to keep their Kashmiriyat alive by staying close to their homeland. But militants wont let that happen.

And Do you know that Butt/Bhat are Kashmiri Pandit surnames? You can find Muslims in Kashmir with that surnames since they converted to Islam. That shows how deep are the bonds of Hindus and Pandits with Kashmir. Read about it here http://www.panunkashmir.org/

I am not saying that Indian Army or the GoI is an angel. I am not even saying that Islam or Kashmiri separatists are all evil. All I am asking of you and others who bad-mouth Indians and Hindus in general is to read and gain a better perspective on an issue before shooting off your mouths with comments like yours above. Is that too much to ask?

Not that I believe I am answerable to you in any way - The above post is your reaction when you are confronted by something uncomfortable and contrary to your beliefs and opinions? How about proving me wrong?

Nothing is black and white, my friend. Every side, every protagonist has its shades of grey. The sooner you come to terms with that the better it will be for you in terms of expanding your knowledge and developing perspectives.

Actually, I have been hired by RAW to spread as much anti-Pakistan and anti-Muslim propaganda as possible. I am a member of their elite cyber cell. I sit in my special cabin which has a 10 GB dedicated broadband connected to a super computer. My room is filled with scores of monitors and every time there's an anti-India post on any forum, I reply back with a vengeance. I have to post at least 50 posts every day to meet my monthly targets. Damn, I might be have divulged too much info. Please keep this to yourself or I would be fired or even exterminated!

                There, are you happy now?

Moslems insecurity was misplaced and misfounded. It was a ploy of the colonial British to divide and rule. Hence they supported the communalist Arya Samaj, Hindu Mahasabha and Moslem League and oppressed the nationalists of the Indian National Congress and KK.

Yes, many of them are indeed wonderful. I am glad people have balanced perspectives on the Kashmir and terrorism related issues.

But what is the point of your post? What are you trying to get at by collecting responses that are probably inimical to your own views? Are we all supposed to laugh? At whom?

                          1. Pakistan doesnt have a God given right that entitles to it every Muslim person or region. If that would have been the case, post-47 India would have been emptied of all the Muslims. But there are close to 150 million Muslims in India. Clearly, a lot many people were not enamored by the idea of Pakistan.

                          2. Kashmir isnt a piece of pie to give away. It has to be solved amicably between the three parties involved. And as far as I know, Kashmiris (people in Kashmir valley only) would much rather opt for freedom rather than Pakistan.

I can talk about giving up Gilgit-Baltistan. I can talk about genuinely providing freedom to AJK (sic). I can talk about getting back Aksai Chin coveniently gifted to the Chinese. But I dont want to play a mud-slinging game with you.

The issue of Kashmir can be discussed to death amongst us here and we wont be able to find a solution.
