  • "NATO Forces Invaded Our Home!"

*The following is a true story as told by Asmatullah Qarar

In Ghazni province Afghanistan on 19th November 2009 at 3:15 A.M. NATO Forces suddenly broke into my home by blasting open the main gate with explosives and open fired at my cousin Hamdullah who was staying with us at night and doing his small grocery business during the day. Despite being severely wounded Hamdullah managed to escape back to his bedroom and from there he used his mobile phone to call some our family members to tell them what was happening.

Hearing the shots, another one of our guests who is also a close relative, Muhammad Azim woke up and wanted to help Hamdullah but as soon as he got up from his bed he was shot in the chest by NATO soldiers and seriously injured. Muhammad Azim had come to stay with us to seek medication for his Hepatitis B disease. After hearing loud shouting and gun fire, the children staying in the nearby rooms were too terrified to move. One of those children, Rahmatullah, a 14 years old boy said "I heard Hamdullah calling out in pain. He was wounded and desperately needed help but I was too afraid of the soldiers to get up from my bed“.

Meanwhile some of the soldiers went into our living room and arrested my cousin Habiburahman who was working as an employee of the Afghan computer science association. The NATO soldiers let their dogs run loose throughout our home to screen every single room for possible threats. The dogs terrorized every one and attacked one of my aunts causing a bad injury to her hand. They broke every window in our home just to terrorize my family. Then they searched every cabinet and briefcases looking for some sort of evidence. To make sure there was nothing hidden in the cupboards they threw every book including our beloved Quran onto the floor and then stepped over them.

After arresting Habiburahman they came back into our guest rooms and ordered everyone to get out.The teen aged kids who had survived from the firing aimed at the windows of the rooms came out. The soldiers then carefully screened them. At gunpoint their hands were tied and they were ordered by the soldiers to lay down in the muddy yard. One of teenagers, Sadiqullah who was 16 years old, was also arrested and dragged barefoot to one of the waiting helicopters which had landed 2 kilometers away.

Some of our guests, since they had been shot, had lost their strength to get up and come out of the rooms. The troops then entered the rooms and fired lots of bullets into their heads and bodies. Then with Habiburahman and Sadiqullah the soldiers left. On the way to being taken to the helicopter they saw the soldiers fire at and injure a ten year old little boy and his father in the street. Sadiqullah was released after two days of interrogation and said he was tortured during his time in captivity.

In the morning the local police commissioner “Khyal Baz Sherzai “ along with Provincial Reconstruction Team officials came and said that they knew nothing about the operation. They told us that it had been directed from Bagram Air Base. The news of what happened to my family was covered by Al-Jazeera, some local channels and a few Afghan radio stations. Ariana T.V’s reporters captured the most shocking pictures of the incident but didn’t show it possibly because they were threatened by the local police commissioner or Provincial Reconstruction Team.

For years now this is how suspected terrorists are arrested and their families and villages are treated by the NATO forces. The pattern is almost always the same. They go to the suspect's location, arrest the suspect and kill two or three civilians so that the villagers are terrorized and do not host guests any more. This is what happens now almost everyday in Afghanistan .

I already knew these things were happening but reading Asmatulla's description of the events and seeing those photos made me cry. I wish I could make the citizens of all these NATO countries read this story and see these photos so they can know the truth about how innocent people are being terrorized and killed every day in Afghanistan by their soldiers.

I discussed this incident with the brother of the author and he told me that the soldiers that came that night had long beards and were covered with tattoos. I later asked him in an e-mail: "Why do these foreign soldiers have long beards and tattoos? Did you ever find out what happened to Habiburahman ,? I'm so sad and so angry that this terrible injustice happened to your family "

I'd like for everyone to read his reply

            Bia salamona,
Who were they? I don’t know. They were like creatures from other planets; but definitely with US flag chevrons on their shoulders . I can’t imagine that such humans are raised in today’s western societies. I have queried them in one of my poems. I really don’t know why they are so much full of hatred. These are normally the personnel of the famous scandalous security contractors, such as Black Water and others whose law is the lawlessness.
Habib is still in their detention, without any access to trail, or attorney, or right to meet his family to discuss his situation.
I am not that angry, because we have gotten a kind of immunity against these kinds of stories. It is a repeated story. Dozens of fathers hopelessly await an unknown destiny in the dark NATO arbitrary detentions. Many uncles, brothers, sons, and husbands slept healthy in the night, but never did wake up in the morning, even for the obituary of their beloved ones.
Pashtoonocide consistently continues. Rough average of pashtoons being killed everyday mounts 100. The series continues from the last 9 years. 360,000 students are deprived of education in Pashtoon areas, this year. We will miss 360,000 PHDs, Masters, and Graduates after 15-20 years. More concerning is that more youth are joining Madrasas, to learn how to prove Mullah superiority by insulting people, and using religion as a mean of the Aristocratic superiority. Mullah, the most modest and tolerant character of our society turns into the most despotic one, enjoying the change of power balance caused by the assassination of hundreds of tribal elders by ISI during the last three decades of war.

Thanks again for kindliness and sympathy.
            Regards
            Qarar

Not much difference between the Russians and NATO, is there? Interestingly, almost every household in Dera Bugti is also deprived of at least one male member. All for the 'greater good'.
"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be".

"Knowledge will forever govern ignorance; and a people who mean to be their own governors must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives".

That was heart-breaking, I am left speechless.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

This is an English interpretation of a poem by Majeed Qarar that was inspired by that terrible night.

"To the frightening soldier of the coalition"

You are not a serpent nor are you a scorpion
You are not a tarantula nor a venomous snake
Then why is your heart like this?
So full of poisonous hellish hatred

What is this compulsion to kill others?
Are you a wild animal and killing is all you know?
Why does it seem that for you
that the solution of every problem is killing?

May God protect us from ever becoming like you
In physical appearance you look human like me
Your face does not look so different from mine
even your body does not look so different from mine

But you are not like me whose
                    Thousands of grievances go unheard
You have not seen a difficult life like mine
made dark by the death and destruction of war

You are not starving from hunger like me
Nor are you forced from your home like me
There is no one imposing their power upon you
to whom you are helpless and unable to contest

The huge amount of rage that fills your heart
Where did it come from? How did it grow?
As a result of this poisonous hatred of yours
our whole society has suffered greatly

Your desire to destroy knows no mercy
That you even kill the light of a home
You have destroyed our peaceful nights
and filled them with unspeakable horrors

I don't understand what exactly you want
I don't understand why you are doing all these
I don't understand why you are doing all these
                    I don't understand your sickness
